First, a short background: My brother's celebration of life was yesterday (2/7), and today is our mother's birthday. This is a very difficult time for her and our whole family, as this was an unexpected loss of a beautiful soul.
We tried to bring my family here for a birthday dinner. We called over three hours in advance and spoke with Hailey to ask if we could make a reservation for 20 people. She said they could not accommodate such a large reservation on a Saturday night, which is completely understandable. We then informed them that we still really wanted to come to their restaurant, would be arriving around 6:30, and wanted to at least give them a heads-up so they weren’t completely caught off guard. We did not expect to be seated immediately and said we were perfectly okay with waiting an hour or however long it would take. She was not happy with that answer and told us we would be refused service at the door. We thought maybe there was some misunderstanding and requested a manager. Unfortunately, that was a waste of time because Jennifer was just as rude and inconsiderate. We again expressed that we wanted to come, were willing to wait, and could even split our party into smaller groups that did not need to be seated together. Again, we were told we would be refused service. At this point, there was a little bit of tension, and we requested a GM to try and understand why we could not be accommodated despite our willingness to be flexible. The response was (I’ll let you use your imagination for the tone that was used), “Oh, don’t worry sweetie, I’ll just give you the number to corporate.” I’ll give you a hint: it wasn’t polite.
At the end of the day, as someone who has worked in customer service, I can tell you that the customer is NOT always right. However, it’s very different when a customer bluntly demands something versus when a customer is trying to be reasonable and flexible with the business. If four families of five came into your restaurant, would you turn them all away? Is the seating capacity at this location less than 20 people? I’ll be the first to tell you we did not inform them of our family’s situation, but we didn’t need to—it’s a personal matter. However, to the owners, managers, staff, and especially Jennifer: Maybe consider that you may not always know the full story. My family will not be returning to this restaurant in the future, so no worries there. But hopefully, the next time a family wants to share a moment together at your establishment, good or bad, you will remember this. Maybe then that “20 top at 6:30” will seem like less of a burden to your staff and more of an opportunity for your name to be a part of something bigger. It costs zero dollars to be a kind...
Read moreThe food was pretty good at the Mulligans on Indian River.
In our party we had the fish and chips, the nachos, and the lobster roll.
The fish and chips was pretty good. Instead of a flaky crispy crust, it used a crunchy seasoned crust which worked really well for dipping in tartar without getting greasy fingers or the piece falling apart. When they say monster fish they mean it, as each piece had to be about ten inches long. Aside the two pieces of fish I got a decent handful of fries (chips) and a small bowl of rather tasty cole slaw.
The nachos were also well received, with a generous portion of meat and toppings across a decent sized pile of chips, and it didn't look like any pieces were left wanting for topping. It took the longest to eat of all our entrees.
The lobster roll was a nice sized roll covered in rather tasty looking lobster, which our third diner devoured quickly and gave a satisfied thumbs up when asked about their meal.
The drinks were pretty decent, I had a daiquiri such tasted strongly of strawberries and very little of the alcohol in the underlying liquor could be tasted. It was not, as some others have been, sugary sweet either, and didn't feel like I was drinking strawberry syrup.
All in all the only detractors at mulligans were those in our particular lunch atmosphere. We showed up on a rainy day (not their fault), and chose a patio seat, where the first table the waitress was about to offer had a small leak dripping away on the table. We got a second table by the ocean facing side, but we were right up against a portable air conditioner. While I recognize that it's hot in Florida and a portable ac unit can bring needed relief to a section not properly cooled by built in ventilating, it was not the most exciting dinner accompaniment to have a vibration and constant metallic hum behind one's chair.
Those minor gripes aside, I look forward to a revisit to Mulligans next time I'm down...
Read moreDecided to eat at Mulligan's Beach House on a whim. Not a good experience from the time we entered the front door. As soon as we walked in, three of our group headed for the restroom as I waited to check in. The host was goofing around with a few of the wait staff and left everyone standing there until she was finished. Once she finally approached us, she asked how many we had and if everyone was here. I told that three were in the bathroom. As soon as I said that, she started checking in the line of people behind us. I've heard of not seating a party if there was still people who hadn't arrived at the restaurant but not when a few people were in the bathroom. Once everyone was out of the bathroom, they seated us in a rear corner. The waiter approached us and took our drink and appetizer order. He filled our dinner drink order but we had to wait a while on the bar drinks. The manager brought out our appetizers which were supposed to be nachos. Instead, he brought spinach and artichoke dip with some tortilla chips and looked at us like we were crazy when we told him that was not what we ordered. In fact, he argued with us that nachos are tortilla chips with spinach dip when the waiter approached and told him it was wrong. The manager continued to argue with the waiter as well until finally he said, "oh, nachos like with cheese, tomatoes, jalapenos and stuff".......duh, yes that's nachos my friend! Our bar drinks finally arrived and were terrible as well. I'm okay with a strong drink but these were so full of liquor that the drink itself could not be enjoyed. It was really like drinking a straight shot. For dinner, some of us ordered the lobster roll and found the lobster itself to be very dry. While our waiter was great and very apologetic about all the issues, this is definitely not a place we...
