Service was great but this was the worst sushi experience I've had in the Pittsburgh area. Edamame was $6 (overpriced) and was waaay overcooked to the point where it was grey and mushy. I ordered the poke bowl which was supposed to come with a cabbage slaw. The cabbage looked like it was bought presliced and had no dressing on it whatsoever. Pic attached where you can see the dry cabbage. The poke bowl was literally just unseasoned chunks of fish, dry cabbage, fish row, and scallions. No sauce. We saw this restaurant was top rated and were severely disappointed, especially for the price point, serving size, and lack of quality of some of the menu items. Also the drinks were tasty but weak and overpriced.

I'm gonna start this off by letting you know that I am not a big fan of sushi or seafood. That being said, The Slippery Mermaid is a delicious spot to eat. I have been twice now and I think the menu offers options for all sorts of people. You can go the classic sushi route and have some good rolls that way, or you can go in another direction like I do. I got the Steeler Pleaser roll which substitutes steak for the usual fish. The combination of flavors in this roll are delightful. I also have tried fishy rolls and was happy with the balance between fishy and other flavors. I highly recommend this place. My parents visited me in Pittsburgh and they commented that this was the best meal they had here.

The Best Sushi and Sashimi in Pittsburgh!! We ate lunch there about 1:30 on a Thursday, the place was dead when we arrived but 4 other tables filled within 5 minutes of us. Very nice caribbean feel atmosphere, outside dining was closed and offered no shade on during the 1 sunny day of summer. The waitress was polite, knowledgable and made helpful suggestions. The iced tea was fresh brewed and sweetened just enough 👍. The seaweed salad was very good as was the perfect edamame. We shared a Steeler Pleaser and a Chef Mermaid Bowl, both were Excellent 😘. I highly recommend this establishment. We look forward to eating here again soon.

We frequently get take-out from here and there’s always a problem. The sushi quality is pretty good and but the takeout service needs serious work. Dining in is usually great, but you WILL NOT get the same quality with to-go orders.

Side sauces like spicy mayo or eel sauces are almost always forgotten - but they won’t forget to charge you regardless. Leaving off additions, forgetting to remove something when requested, or forgetting things all together happens about every time we get takeout.

What makes the problem worse is there is no way to contact them. Their phone line is nonexistent so if there is a problem you better like driving all the way back to the restaurant.

Tonight there was a rainstorm and tornado watch. We were in the area and decided to get takeout. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of not checking our bag before driving away. All 4 side sauces for a $54 order were forgotten - but we were charged for it.

We tried calling the restaurant and leaving messages. They were about to close within 40 mins and we live 35 minutes away. We had to drive back in the rainstorm with it down pouring just to get the side sauces. Our family will not eat their rolls without the sauces.

Once arriving at the restaurant we were not offered an apology or even a refund for the sauces alone for having to drive all the way back. This is poor service and poor management. We certainly did not expect a $54 order to be refunded, but they could have refunded the sauces, done a partial refund on one of the rolls, or given a store credit for the inconvenience!

Dine in service is usually great, but with so many problems trying to get the same service quality with takeout I’m not sure we’ll be back. We like to support locally owned business and don’t always have time to dine-in. I hope they are able to offer better take-out service in the future before they burn a bridge with another loyal patron of...

I've eaten at Slippery Mermaid multiple times and have never been disappointed with the sushi.  The past few times, I've had the same waitress, Rylan, who is very nice and super accommodating to our orders.  She is always smiling and very friendly which is hard to come by these days, which leads me to my experience with the hostess...

After initially telling me a 15 minute wait, I decided to check on how much longer it would be since it had now been 40 minutes.  (Which, I get it, wait times can be finicky).  The hostess is sitting on a bar stool playing on her phone.  She tells me I am next on the list, but doesn't give me an updated wait time, and gets irritated when I ask how much longer.  She responds "I mean I don't know...I can't tell people to get up and leave."  I laugh and say "I've been in the restaurant business.  I'm not telling you to tell people to leave.  I'm asking for an update on my wait time.  Are there tables that have been given their check... just have had their food dropped ... etc."   She abruptly gets up, even more annoyed this time and says "ok I guess I can find out."   That's when she starts bussing empty tables.

Now, as someone who has worked many years in the restaurant business, as a hostess, it was my job to bus tables and to try and move customers.  But I guess now a days, employers are just happy to have a body to fill a vacancy.

She then tells me that our table is ready, takes us to our table in an extremely irritated fashion and barely mumbles something about the menu being available on the QR code.  Gee thanks, Miss Friendly.

For all I know, this girl is the manager or the owner, but she was pissy as all heck when I was simply asking her...

Very cute place, and the sushi was great. My son liked the chicken teriyaki. I was pretty disappointed with the service. I ordered on the website 4 to 5 hours prior for a 4:35pm pickup time. I arrived at 4:40, and the hostess said she'd check on my food. There was not one other customer in the restaurant at this time. I caught bits and pieces of laughter and conversation from the kitchen, and, from my understanding, they hadn't even started my order. The hostess said it would be a few minutes. 5 minutes later a couple of people came in and ordered and were told their food would be ready in 10 minutes. 5 minutes after this, I asked if the food was going to be out soon, because I was late picking up my son at this point. She said they were boxing it up so it would be a few more minutes. I asked if the website was the preferred way to place to go orders. She said yes it is, but they had pushed my order because someone else called and asked if they could pick their order up early...? She did apologize. A few minutes later she brought out my food, but I checked the bag and a couple things were missing from the order, so she went back to the kitchen. If they were slammed with takeout orders, I would definitely understand, but the couple that ordered 5 minutes after I came in got their food at the same time I did. I don't think it's acceptable to wait almost 30 minutes for your order when you placed the order hours in advance. I can't recommend it for takeout unfortunately but maybe dine-in would be a...
