Tonini’s Woodfired Pizzeria — Restaurant in Shelby Charter Township

It's possible I visited on an off day, but while it was very busy, the food in no way justified the price or the crowd.

We started with the bruschetta caprese; although the kitchen staff made a mistake and served us the bruschetta without basil, later correcting this when I sent it back, it was irredeemably flawed: it was nothing more than cold oil-drenched dinner rolls, halved, dusted with dried oregano, with one halved cherry tomato on each piece, a small amount of mozzarella, and a tiny amount of wilted basil on top. No satisfying, bready crunch, almost no tomato, and, again, no basil at first. I do not think they understand what bruschetta is about.

The wood-fired pizzas were not up to standard. Although the quality of the ingredients in the toppings seemed high, the fundamentals were wrong. The sauce of the pizza margherita was far too watery, and as a result the crust was undercooked towards the center. The crust, too, was off. To my taste, it seemed like a quick-rise dough, undeveloped, and with a dusty texture, no chew at all, no pleasant flavor from a slow rise ferment.

I have yet to find good wood-fired pizza locally. I was hopeful that Tonini's was the answer to what I was looking for, but sadly this is...

If you're on the hunt for the best pizza in town, look no further than Tonini's Pizza! Now, let's talk about the pizza – it truly is exceptional! We tried the Wood Fire Gaby’s Style, New York Style Pepperoni, and the BBQ Wood Fire, and each one was a masterpiece in its own right. The crust was perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of crispiness, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. The place was super busy, however, the staff was on point and got everyone seated and their orders fast and fresh!

The service at Tonini's is equally impressive. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always eager to make your experience enjoyable. They truly go above and beyond to ensure that you feel welcome and valued as a customer.

While the food here may be great, the way I was treated completely ruined the entire visit. I have never felt so disrespected and humiliated in a restaurant before. I was shocked to find a 20% gratuity automatically added to our bill for a party of five—with no signage, no warning, and no mention from the server. When I calmly asked about the policy, instead of a professional explanation, one of the owners aggressively jumped into the conversation, raised their voice, and told me to leave the restaurant without paying.

I was stunned. I wasn’t rude—I simply asked a fair question. But I was met with hostility and an unprovoked outburst from someone who clearly doesn’t understand basic customer service or respect. It was insulting, completely out of line, and deeply unprofessional.

The servers work hard and absolutely deserve to be tipped—but being ambushed with hidden charges and then shouted at for asking about them is beyond frustrating. I left feeling angry, embarrassed, and completely disrespected.

No matter how good the food is, no one deserves to be treated this way. I will not be returning—and I’ll make sure others know how toxic and disrespectful the environment is under this kind...
