Based on the huge number of 5-star reviews I was optimistic about La Sierra in Sherwood. We eat at many classic-style Mexican restaurants within 4 miles or so of Tualatin. This was a disappointing experience.
We were in a group of 5 and we walked in around 8p on a Tuesday. I liked the bright decor and the restaurant felt mostly clean. The chips were warm, but were obviously not home-made. We were served a regular salsa and a spicy salsa. The regular tasted like tomato paste. The spicy salsa had good flavor, but was very watery (this is a preference thing).
The food was disappointing all-around. The tamales were exceptionally dry, including the meat. The entire thing tasted like the steamer itself. I was excited that the refried beans looked like they had some real texture to them and werenāt really thin, like many other restaurants. Unfortunately, the beans and rice had an off-putting taste. Iām not saying that they use Saran Wrap, but everything had a slight chemically taste (maybe it is a warmer or microwave?). The fish tacos were disappointing and looked like something you could make at home. The Huevos Rancheros was also disappointing, but this was probably due to the rice and beans issues previously mentioned.
After seeing a recent review praising the affordable prices, I was shocked to see the menu. The Huevos Rancheros were over $16 š³, which is a lot for a dish that is usually closer to $12 everywhere else. I agree that the portion sizes are large.
The only saving grace here was the server. He was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, I wonāt be returning.
Although I canāt fault the business for this, the entrance to the parking lot is confusing. The maps apps take you through the ice rink parking lot, but there are cones set up to prevent you from getting to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHaving been to the Dundee location we thought we would try the local La Sierra. We won't be returning. You only get one chance to make a first impression and they failed. Maybe the location is jinxed, because the former Mexican restaurant at this location failed. The place wasn't crowded with maybe 5 tables occupied.
What went wrong? First, they got the order wrong and we had to send one plate back and wait even longer. Next, the server never came back to check on the table... not even to deliver the check - we had to go up to the register after waiting a good 10 minutes. No drink refills were offered-how could they be with no server coming by.
The food was mediocre. The rice was bland and dry. The fish tacos consisted of chopped up fish mixed with some tomatoes and other veggies. No slaw or other topping typical of fish tacos. Very little flavor, had to put the table salsa on it to get some flavor! I would be surprised if there was more than 4 tablespoons of filling in them.
The chimichanga was okay but the beef was overcooked and chewy. Again, very little flavor.
We had high hopes for a quality Mexican place locally but...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreReally spotty experience. Went for the first time today, Monday. Pretty clean, nice interior, not decorated by beer and alcohol distributors. But that was the best of it.
Ordered a combo plate with ground beef. One taste of the enchilada and I immediately knew. The beef was off. Just wrong. Old or really, really badly seasoned. But I think it was old. Not worth what would happen later, so I told them and they offered shredded beef. I accepted. The beef wasn't old like the ground beef, but still bad-tasting. Wife agreed. Ended up eating the refried beans for dinner.
Everything on the plate was desperate for seasoning, meaning salt. How do you make bland refried beans? The salsa was pretty good for quite spicy. No selection of hot sauces to add. The only saving grace was the sherbet they brought.
Came home and wife went immediately to the rest room. Overall a, bad experience. Bland Mexican food that also had almost no flavor. Sigh....
