Kao Thai — Restaurant in Silver Spring

Food was OK- my issue is with the terrible service and lying about prices (which is not the first time this has happened at this restaurant).

I don't usually review for little things, in fact this is my first because I feel like people should be prepared. I called in a carryout order for lunch, was told my total would be $20 and change. When I arrived, somehow the price had increased to $28 and change. When I questioned this, I was told that they were charging dinner prices all day that day. The hostess couldn't tell me why, and when I pointed out that I had been told a different price on the phone, and that lunch prices were advertised in their menu, I was told that they had already charged my card and it couldn't be changed. Fine, so I get more food and have leftovers, right? NOPE. I checked before I left and pointed out that I was given smaller portions than I had before when I got carryout at dinner time- was told they were lunch portions. If they were charging dinner prices, why weren't they dinner portions? Because it's lunchtime... They've tried to charge me dinner prices at lunch before (eating in, on a weekday), but changed them when I called them on it. Check your receipts, these folks are crooks!

Also, if you go for dinner (because the advertised lunch prices just mean less food for the same price)- park in a different garage. The suggested garage is more than half a mile away from the restaurant. There are at least 2 garages and 2 surface lots...

The best Thai restaurant in the Downtown Silver Spring area!

Thankfully they recently renovated and expanded into the next door space, meaning the long waits huddled at the front-door area are long gone. A great option, when the weather is better, is their outdoor sidewalk area. Their lunch combo specials are fantastic value-for-money. You'll find all your favourites like drunken noodles, crab fried rice, and panang style dishes. Don't ever forget the mango sticky rice for dessert. Also love how you can order your meal at bespoke spice level, from 1 to 5, and the rating is accurate (not watered down!)

Kao Thai has always been a stop for me anytime I find myself in Downtown Silver Spring. I used to be a frequent eater here when I lived in DTSS (have since relocated to Baltimore), but anytime I find myself back in town I make sure to make a quick stop to dine in or grab some takeout. I’m personally a huge fan of their Green Curry which in my opinion outdoes almost every Thai restaurant in the area, but have had their Pad Thai on occasion which I find great as well! I recently picked up some takeout and they were doing a great job handling the pandemic with a unique pen system and their overall organization. I hope to eat food from here for years to come!
