I was traveling through Sioux City this week on business and since I enjoy trying local mom and pop pizza joints I "Googled" pizza places. I read that Jerry's was the place to try so I did. Before you read below you need to know that prefer a thin crust that has a little chew to it and a thick layer of cheese that has perfect brown bubbles on top with a rich tomato sauce.
First, the woman I spoke to, who is one of Jerry's grand daughters, was very helpful and pleasant. She even took a minute to show me some of the photos on the wall of her family throughout the years going back to her grand father. FYI, I picked up my pizza at the Morningside Ave location.
When I walked in it looked like it was vacant. There were two high top tables on the left, drink cooler on the right and the rest of the large space was open with nothing but a concrete floor and a counter with no one there. Someone had just left there so I knew there was business going on. Like I said, once inside, it was a pleasant experience.
You can tell that the place had been making pies all day as the prep counter was full of evidence of the fact. There are 6 large ovens against the wall on the right which made me wonder how cool it is when they are so busy that all 6 are full of pies.
With my pizza hot out of the oven I was given a lesson on how to eat my pizza traveling in my car. Since they serve it in a paper bag stapled at the top she showed me that I need to tear a small hole in the top and take out a slice that way which made sense.
What I noticed first was that all of the toppings are on top...no cheese on top. Under the pile of toppings is the cheese and sauce. Taking a slice there was a lot of great cheese stretching out. Biting in I notice the crust. As I said, I prefer a chewy thin crust but Jerry's is different. Jerry's crust is more like a cracker; very crunchy and a little thinker. The sauce was ok and could have used more flavor as I prefer a more robust sauce. That may be explained by the fact that I saw pizza's there being made by ladling sauce out of a large 10# can.
Overall, I prefer my pizza a different style than what Jerry's serves. If you like the toppings on top and the cheese underneath with a crunchy crust than I am sure you will like it very much. For me, I will try a different local place next time traveling in town.
So far, the best local pizza I have found in the area so far in my personal opinion is Pizza King in Brookings, SD. They have placed at the nationals in Las Vegas in the recent years and makes their crust and sauce...
Read moreCalled 6:30 pm, ordered a pizza, $22.00+ delivered, told it would be an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes....that means at the latest it would be 7:45 pm. At 8:00 pm, they called to verify the address, and said it would be there in minutes...8:35 pm the driver showed up. My home is less than 2 miles away. The pizza was stone cold. Called Jerry’s Pizza, and told them....she asked if we had eaten any of it...and I said no we hadn’t. She said, she would make a new one and get it right out to us. (and, she wanted the one, that had been delivered, to be returned) at 9:30 pm no pizza...called Jerry’s Pizza, and asked......where is it? Was put on hold...after a few minutes, was told...it’s not here, so it must be on it’s way.9:40 pm it was...
Read moreI'm from out of state (Oklahoma) and we all wanted pizza that was from a non pizza food chain so I did a search and came across Jerry's Pizza and I'm glad I did. The ordering process was easy and the man was extremely nice and helpful especially being from out of state and unsure what they had. The delivery was fast, the delivery man was super nice and the pizza was hot. We ordered half pepperoni and sausage and the other half Canadian bacon and pineapple. Both sides were very delicious and not greasy at all even though the pizza had pepperoni on it. In my opinion this is the best pizza place I've had and the crust is superb. Thank you for a wonderful experience...
