First off, I am not from Iowa so perhaps my taste buds are different from those who live in this area. I like flavor and spice but this restaurant had neither. The salsa was on the liquid side even with being a chunkier salsa with no spice and the chips were not fresh or they were overcooked because they were harder than chips should be. I ordered a Chile verde and a single tamale, which they only offer pork for. The tamale was more like a smothered burrito, it was mushy, the meat on the inside had little to no flavor, and the sauce they put on top was VERY salty. The Chile verde plate was good proportioned but the beans were bland, the meat was almost drowning in the verde sauce which was too watery. I did like the overall flavor of the chile verde despite the consistency of the sauce. I did think the service was pretty good in seating, taking orders, and had a timely manner of bringing the food out. Think they could perhaps smile a little? The prices were also fair but I wouldn't eat here again with the quality of the food. Think I could've used more margaritas to at least finish...
Read moreIf I could leave zero stars, I definitely would. My husband and I came in for dinner after we saw the great reviews. Dont believe them. It’s gotta be friends and family leaving reviews to boost them. We ordered margaritas, they were just okay. Salsa was okay but not a ton of flavor. Chips tasted stale & not salted in the slightest. Ordered the cheese con carne and the meat literally came out RED. See photos 🤦🏼♀️ my husband got the steak nachos with steak and shrimp, and said they were okay but couldn’t eat any more after I informed him there was something crunchy in my fajita quesadilla that shouldn’t be crunchy. Rice was over salted & could only eat some of it by taking the salt less chips mixed with the salsa and rice to actually eat some of it. Not mad about any of it, just got a good laugh after the great reviews. Wouldn’t...
Read moreI am from out of town and wanted Mexican food. Monterrey Restaurant is conveniently located in a little strip mall adjacent to Walmart. The staff are very attentive and I was served promptly.
I ordered chicken fajitas for 14.95. I received a huge portion on a skillet with beans served on a side plate, but no sign of guacamole or sour cream in sight. Also the chicken needed just a tad more fajita seasoning, though still good. Also a tad more grilled 🌰 onion.
It was very, very good. However, it should be served with sour cream and guacamole for that price. The chips were light and crispy and the salsa great.
I come from south Texas and the beans seemed a little thick and bland. It could be they just serve them differently than I am used to in Texas. Sorry, but the beans tasted like they came...
