I used to get birthday cakes here constantly years ago, but moved too far away and it's been years since I've been there. The other day, I had a hankering for real birthday cake frosting, (which you can't find everywhere anymore) so I drove up there, and asked the girl at the counter for a white birthday cake. Her answer was, and I quote, "We only have yellow and chocolate." So I said to her, "Yellow birthday cakes? I bought them here all the time and they were always white." She replied with, "No, we only have yellow and chocolate." Now think about a yellow cake mix. It has a distinctive flavor that's delicious, but does not work as a birthday cake. So I said to her, "If I cut a piece of this cake, is it gonna be actually yellow, or will it look beige?" "It's vanilla," she replied. So based on her saying the cake would be yellow, I almost did not buy a cake. Her saying it's vanilla, almost guaranteed that it was beige colored, not yellow. So I took the chance that this girl was either colorblind or new, and didn't know what the heck she was talking about, and I bought a birthday cake. Wouldn't you know it; it was what people call a white (beige) birthday cake! What I'd like to know is, why on Earth did that girl call it yellow? And she was adamant about it. If any managers or owners are reading this, please tell your girls not to tell people that the birthday cakes are yellow when they're not. Thank you. (PS: the cake had a coconut flavor and didn't taste anything like the birthday cakes that you used to make. Also, your 'Russian Teacakes' have lost the rich flavor that they used to have. What happened? Very disappointed in the...
Read moreI love Pastryland bakery, and have never been disappointed, except when I ordered a cake for my mothers 80th birthday, and was very important to us. I went in the night before, and chose the colors, which would match the whole theme of the party, there was a cake on display, and I chose the color roses on that cake, and every other Rose was supposed to be royal blue. When I picked up the cake today neither of the colors were the colors I told them to do, and the baker wasn’t there so I had no choice but to take it. I told them these are not the colors and I’m not happy with this cake, the lady said well maybe these are her versions of royal blue! As far as I’m concerned royal blue is royal blue, not to mention the other color was not the correct color either. I gave three stars because they are a great bakery, just left today extremely disappointing. And they never even offered to reconcile it for me in anyway. If I had had more time I would’ve made them redo it, but...
Read moreA small bakery with a wide selection, it has an Italian Pastry Shop vibe that would be at home on Federal Hill.
Of all the delights they had available, I decided on the Bismark and it was pretty much perfect. Pretty much a bisected doughnut filled with cream, it was sweet and fluffy. I would go back for one with little hesitation.
My wife got a raspberry twist, which fell far from perfection, tasting rather dry and unappealing. The cookie we shared was similar - something somewhat dry and ultimately forgettable. The twist and cookie would have been grand with a coffee or tea, but they did not stand well on their own.
The service was fine, though it felt on the cold side. Eating our pastries in the store, it didn't feel welcoming despite there being tables and such.
Would I go back?
Yes, though I would probably take my goodies to go rather...
