Smastad Bakery Cafe on Broadway in Sonoma is a welcome addition to the bakery cafes in and around Sonoma. Move over Peet’s and Dutch Brothers, you have some competition.
Like all good bakeries, customers must get there early to catch all the best goodies. I arrived late around almost 12 Noon and so most of the Swedish specialties were gone.
I was able to get the Swedish version of shortbread called Vaniljkakor. It is thick, buttery and has a dab of raspberry jam in the middle. So satisfying, not too sweet. And not crunchy or hard. Nothing like those Scandinavian cookies one sees at the grocery store or drug store in a tin.
Smastad’s version is the real thing and so yummy!
When I go back, which I hope will be soon, I want to try the savory pastries like the smörgastarta, and of course their own fresh house roasted coffee.
There’s plenty of seating in the back, a nice little picnic like area. No doubt Smastad will be the place to get a morning cup when the weather gets warmer.
Staff is friendly, welcoming and helpful. I was told to get to Smastad by 7:00 AM when they open. They have lots of items fresh out...
Read moreWe are visiting Sonoma from Los Angeles for my wife's 40th and are staying nearby at The Lodge. I wanted to find a place for good coffee and pastries and Småstad hit the mark! I got my wife the oat milk latte and she loved it. I got the cardamom and brown sugar latter with oat milk and it was absolutely delicious. We are both coffee snobs, which important to know and why I had to go get coffee and not hotel room options (which were not bad to be honest La Columbe).
We share the lingonberry bar and little loaf with currants & lingonberries. Our favorite was the bar but they were both delicious.
This place is worth a visit and we are always happy (and prefer) to support small business. Plus I'm 50% Norwegian, so extra happy to support a Scandinavian business...but my rating has nothing to do with that.
Friendly and fast service.
Cute little indoor space.

Read moreReally cute place across the street from a high school. Parking is often crowded, but there's street parking nearby. They have a suggested entrance and exit, to keep the flow moving. Cute pastries, good coffee, and according to my friend who really likes matcha, really good matcha. It's Swedish themed, so they have some Swedish themed snacks too.
Inside seating is a little cramped/cozy. They usually have music playing. Lots of outdoor seating, which in California is often appreciated. Lots of shady spots too!
There's a bathroom with a key.
Really great place to study/chat with friends. Service was excellent, and there were some nice people around too.
There's also some hooks for dogs, if you have dogs and want to keep them...
