I cannot speak of the atmosphere or the physical structure and cleanliness of the store but I can tell you that I advised my husband to stop and pick up a sandwich based on the reviews and word of mouth. Regarding service, my husband described it as basic, his words were "ok nothing to crow about" Let me describe the sandwich to you: Two regular slices of sourdough commercial supermarket shelf bread, a schmear of chicken salad, a 1/4 romaine lettuce leaf and two small thin tomato slices. The height was that of two bread slices, one on top of each other, envision something similar to what we prepare for a childs school lunch. about the taste of the sandwich: I have had infinitely better chicken salad elsewhere. The bread is commercial as I describe above and the lettuce, not wilted but not crispy fresh and the tomato totally tasteless. If my rating was to be based on just this description plus the non descript service, I would have given a three star -not exceptional/very good and not bad- until I saw the price. Here we clearly have a huge problem of value. At $6.99 plus $0.56 tax a whopping $7.55 for something I would not have paid $2.00. This is what I call "highway robbery" and since I have paid more for food before (for a small unbelievable tasteful item served in one of the most beautiful locations with exceptional service), I would have gladly recommend it BUT THIS IS entirely and totally...
Read moreHere's the deal for you Greenville transplants, you don't probably get this place anymore than I got the Philly Steak places in Philly. Here let me break it down to you, it's local comfort food, we grew up on it , same way folks from Philly grew up on cheese steaks with cheese wiz. It's never been about wherever you came from, nor will ever be, it's about here. Going here and ordering the chicken wrap is no different than going to Krispy Krème and not ordering hot and now, it should be a crime :) OK so let me break you upstate newbies in correctly , you go here you avoid all the cupcake/BS sandwiches, and order a devil egg, original chicken salad, baked ham and pepper, or pimento cheese sandwiches on white bread, toasted, everything else on the menu is for the clueless and the transplants. When in Rome , do as the Romans do, or you are missing the point. This is the oldest restaurant in Greenville for a reason, comfort food, it's not a Yankee deli, it's local comfort food and we are not changing it for you, you know those interstates run both...
Read moreI do not ever like leaving a bad review. But we left the sandwiches on the table so they knew. First time I have not eaten what I was served in years. Chicken salad sandwich was premade and refrigerated. So the bread was soggy. Texture awful. I had the peppered ham sandwich. Some type of finely blended potted meat. Mushy texture. Bland taste. Prices are great. But surprising for Greenville. Actually the good reviews are surprising. So we will not give less than 3 in hopes it was a bad day only.
Look at my reviews. I do not give low reviews and don’t want to. But guys…. It was not good. My wife has never walked away from food in her life because she is too nice. She did this time. Don’t refrigerate your sandwiches in advance. That’s cutting a corner that will cost you business. Make them fresh even if you have to...
