Context of this review - this is not a traditional Chinese takeout restaurant. It's a self - serve spot that charges you by the weight of the food. At the time of this review they're currently running a promotion of 9 bucks for a box of food.

Of all the fast takeout places near me, Hong Kong express in south salt lake takes the cake for me. The gentleman at the counter is always so nice and remembers regulars and tries to hook them up whenever he can.

The fried rice is pretty fluffy and not overly greasy whereas a lot of places near me are somehow dry and super oily.

The noodles are pretty good, nothing crazy though.

Beef and broccoli is standard in flavor profile but the broccoli is nicely cooked, good crisp. Beef is tender and it's not overly salty.

General tsos chicken is great with real peppers that give you that spicy numb in your mouth feeling.

They have honey shrimp but keep the sauce separate so the batter on the shrimp stays crispy which is actually nice, add sauce as you see fit.

My personal favorite thing is the fried fish. It's got a light crisp, seasoned well and the fish is flaky. I'd get a whole box of this if not for the fact that most of their food items are pretty darn tasty (I haven't tried everything).

The facility is clean, they keep a container of lemon water and cups as well as steamed rice in case you're not wanting lo mein or fried rice. All the tables have sriracha, and that typical crushed chili pepper mix. Ketchup, soy sauce and mustard are there as well in case that's what you'd like. No fountain drinks but they've got a fridge with sodas.

All in all the food is pretty good if you're looking for a quick bite to eat. The owners are warm and nice here and I always look forward to coming here. Again, it's not mind blowing restaurant stuff but if I had to choose between this or Panda Express this wins me...

I was SO disappointed! We were excited about items listed on your website and posted on your window that according to the person behind the counter you have not served in a very long time. That was my first time at the restaurant, which I told the server, and I did not realize it was self serve. I wish your server would have communicated how things work since I pointed out I had never been there before. Between the confusion about your options, the lack of signage directing new customers and having to all of a sudden decide on a whole new meal for 6 people after we had a plan that was based on what was according to your website a "recently updated menu", I was taking longer than average to get going. The server offered assistance but the way they went about it made me feel rushed. My experience was one of the worst I have had anywhere...which is a pity, because a few of the items we tried were above average good. The steak and broccoli was amazing. Ideally, in the future, you'll decide to pair the good food with...

if i had to describe this place in one word it’d be perfect. it tastes so wonderful! i just went here for the first time, will definitely be coming back with more people. go ahead and support this place and try out their bomb food! the staff i met was the nicest person ive met all day, always checking up on us and giving us good customer service in total. if people tell you that the food isn’t good, they must be lying or went to the wrong place because it was just as good as the food in hawaii. the atmosphere was such a good one when all the things there was good. i recommend the bulgogi, it had such an extraordinary flavor to it. they give large amounts for such a small price. i feel like this is way too good of a deal, up the price to how much you guys wanna. this was like a steal 😂. i loved it here and can’t wait...

The "sweet and sour pork" was the driest sweet and sour dish I've eaten in my life. May as well just call it "pork". I even ordered extra sweet and sour sauce on the side as a safeguard and they gave me the 2 smallest packets of sauce I've seen in my life. The "ham fried rice" has no discernable ham in it, or egg for that matter. The picture they have on the menu is SUPER misleading. May as well call it "pea fried rice" cause that's the only thing in there other than rice. Only reason my rating is as high as 3* is because the sides were decent and very reasonably priced

Hong Kong is our newest favorite asian restaurant. Even better, they just opened in a great location down the road from me. Food is hot and fresh, the service is so friendly and welcoming, and you simply can’t beat the price for a 5 dish, make-your-own bowl. If you’re a Panda regular, this is fresher, better service, faster, more affordable, and more delicious. Best cheese wontons I have ever had before.
