Higashi Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in South Windsor

Smaller restaurant (totally fine). We went as a family of 6 (2 adults 4 kids under 10, who happen to like sushi). We were sat quickly, the restaurant wasn't busy. The restaurant atmosphere is unpretentious and simple, seems clean and it's quaint. The place got 4.5 star review so I had high expectations which is a standard for me when looking up sushi places. We ordered 10 rolls, and two chicken dinners (teriyaki and General Tso). The chicken dinners were great, the miso soup- yum! 5 stars for those dinners as they were tasty and well cooked and would order something like that again here. The sushi wasn't the best I've had but it wasn't the worst. We tend to order raw sushi so, it just has to be excellent imo. I don't know if the fish wasn't super fresh, or maybe the cucumber or avocado but something wasn't hitting the mark and I can't say that id go back for round two...

Higanshi sushi Was really good before. Now they don't know how to cook the sushi rice. Very very sticky sushi rice. Last night 8pm I got sushi beginner , roll combo and spicy roll combo. Oh my god soooo bad don't even ask. I just throw out everything. And I called next day(today)to refund my money. They told me you should call us before 24hours. So I was yes this is before 24hours. Not even 7pm yet. Hello??? And he changed his mine? Oh you should call right away .... ???? Are you serious ??? I will bring your food from yesterday. He said that's from last night. So what? If I bring it back last night sell it back to someone else? Also he said it was Friday so what??? Friday sushi rice cooked different????? I am complaint about sushi rice !!! He keep saying fish !!!! He was fish head I can't deal with this people. Bye bye...

We were excited to try Higashi based on all the strong positive reviews. When my husband brought the food home, I was looking forward to the tempting smells and wonderful flavors. Unfortunately, the food smelled of cheap, old oil and was lacking in flavor. What flavor there was tasted like Gordon Food Service, not authentic Japanese. The tempura chicken was so heavily coated in tempura (and corn flakes? It looked odd...) and the oil temp must have been too low because it was saturated in oil. It also had no flavor except cheap, old oil. We also got the fried rice, pork dumplings, and chicken teriyaki, along with miso soup. It all disappointed. 2 stars because the restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly, and the chopsticks that came with the food were...
