We lost power at our home in Southbury and found ourselves at the Hilton in Southington, directly across the street from Koshi Sushi & Grill. After reading the reviews, we decided to have dinner there last night. I have been eating Sushi since 1978. I've had it in Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York and Hawaii. So I think I can speak with some authority. When we arrived, there were two customers eating. I was greeted warmly and told to sit anywhere I wanted. The first table was dirty with spilt food. I chose the second table which was less dirty. I was immediately asked if I was ready to order. This is before I had seen a menu. I asked my server if she would please clean the table which she did. One of the first things I noticed was how dirty the restaurant was, both behind in the cook area and in the seating area. There were more than a few flies buzzing around. Their windows were filthy with Christmas lights that have yet to be removed.
My server asked what I would like to drink. I asked for ice water which arrived warm with 3 or 4 ice cubes. There was no cutlery, chop sticks or condiments on the table. There was a half bottle of soy sauce.
Now to the food. I ordered the Shrimp / Vegetable Tempura appetizer for $8.50. What I received was a deep fried collection of 3 broccoli florets, 3 onion rings and 3 pre-breaded shrimp. It had a burnt taste which tells me the oil it was fried in was dirty. When I commented to the server that it wasn't Tempura, she responded that it was Tempura batter and that everyone does it differently. That's simply wrong. Tempura cooking is an art, deep frying is not.
I ordered the 10 piece Sushi dinner which comes with Miso soup and a "pink" roll for $19.99. Keeping in mind there were only two people eating when I arrived, my 10 piece dinner took almost have an hour to make it to my table. The fish was warm, there was very little sushi rice with each piece and the pieces were too small, not even close to what they should be. The Miso soup was not hot but it was tasty. The "pink" roll was okay.
I would respectfully suggest that the owners and their staff learn more about authentic Japanese food and how to correctly prepare and serve it. You'll be surprised how much better it tastes and how much your customers will appreciate the quality and attention to authenticity. I suspect many of the customers who have reviewed your establishment aren't familiar with authentic Japanese food. They've grown accustomed to "American Sushi" which doesn't come close.
You seem to be the only Sushi place in town. Why not step up your game and do...
Read moreThis restaurant used to be very good and one of my go to spot on the weekend. The food was good, the am ambiance was nice and the service was on top. I usually come with my girlfriend for lunch on saturday and let me tell you the service that they offer here is phenomenal. the restaurant is small and the decor is homey but the service that I received was on par as a 5 star restaurant. The waitress was so nice and always knew exactly what we wanted. She was not too pushy but also not too neglectful. The waitress always have the brightest smile on and would always ask us about our day and make small convo, basically a very attentive person. The chef Leo was also very friendly and even came out to talk to us multiple times. I still remember when he came out with the pickled vegetable and offered us some for a sample! I came here as soon as the restaurant open up again in June and never regretted a day here. However, recently I have got to say the service that I received before is just not there. The waitress that served me rushed me a lot. I feel like I barely have time to look at the menu. The other day I asked for a spoon and she came out holding the spoon by the ladle portion. My old waitress would always use a napkin and never touched my utensils. The kitchen also seems unsanitary with chef not wearing gloves like before. The table that we were seated at the other day was dirty and when we asked the waitress to clean so only did a quick wipe. I’ll try coming again in the future but for my experiences these past few months, it’s just not as good as before. I hope that they’ll do better in the future since this was one of my favorite spot to eat at in town. I hope you all the best and will see you again...
Read moreSo I've been wanting to come here for a few months; my husband keep bucking me on it, he finally wanted to go there tonight!!! SO GLAD WE DID!!! The food and service are outstanding!!! I ordered the chicken katsu, which I highly recommend, this is the closest to Hawaiian/Japanese foodie goodness, I'm sad that I ate my plates before I even thought to take a picture of everything. The chicken perfectly flat but moist on the inside, crispy and crunchy on the outside with a delightful fried egg and nice scoop of rice and the sauce was just perfect. So glad they nailed it as I missed this dish no one else's even comes close to as good as this one here in CT. We also had the bulgogi tacos, and they were just brilliant, the meat so flavorful and all the flavors muddled together just right. I think next time I just want to order those and I would be a fat happy cat! My husband ordered the Salmon Mexican roll and it was not only beautiful but quite delicious as he housed it quickly. The chef came out and talked to us about the food, he wanted to know what we thought and talked about the preparation. Was super kind and sent over some homemade pickles and they were outstanding, and also sent over some homemade gingerbread tea, I prefer it cold but you can also get hot. Its Christmas in a glass. I can't wait to come back here and eat my way through the menu!!!! Yum
Super clean, well decorated, the bathroom clean and fully stocked. The staff was quite efficient and very polite.
Definitely a must try,...
