I'm going to title this review Karens Come In All Cultures. Keep reading for the details. If you follow my reviews, you'll know that it's uncommon for me to give a 5 star review for food. In the past, we've eaten at the Marrakesh restaurant before it shut down, and Middle Eastern food is a favorite of ours when we can get it. So while I'm not an expert in this cuisine, I do recognize great flavors. I'll start with the black tea. I'm a coffee guy, preferably black coffee, but I've drank my fair share of black tea from bags. If there ever was a time that I could no longer have coffee, I would switch to their tea. I don't know how they make it, but it is so fresh, bright, and flavorful. The food. It was amazing. The saffron in the rice, the spices, the portions, they know what they're doing. It's funny, they list all the ingredients next to each menu item, but I had no idea what I was ordering. It was great, we'll definitely be back, with friends. As far as the service, you have to keep in mind, this is a small family operation. They were very kind and accommodating and uniquely authentic. There is also a bonus if you eat here, they have a Middle Eastern store attached. Try try try the fruit leather, it's delicious. Zero added sugar. We got the plum as an appetizer for our child. They have bulk spices and nuts as well as serving wear, rugs, and clothes. Now, bout the Karen. As we were waiting for our food, a couple of ladies came in. They both looked of Middle Eastern descent, and one was wearing a form of traditional garb. We could sense an underlying tension between them and our server but minded our own business. As our dinner progressed, the women began to complain about their orders. The rice was either to hot or to cold. The food was to spicy. It started to escalate and the server tried his best to address their issues. Finally he told them that he would comp their meals and asked them to leave his restaurant and not return. One of the ladies began shouting about how he should address a Muslim sister and other stuff and accusing him of being a poor chef. He kept insisting they leave and she threatened to call the cops. Apparently this wasn't the first time this had happened between them, and he'd had enough. At this time, we were more than half done with our meals, enjoying them very much, and she came over to our table and attempted to draw us into the conflict. I can't imagine how embarrassed the owner was, and I'm glad that we were the only other people there. This wasn't his fault and it seemed to me that she held a very superior attitude towards him.

In short, we can't let this family down. This is the only Middle Eastern restaurant that I'm aware of in Spokane. Please stop by for a meal. Show them some love....

I read an article in the inlander about Emrans restaurant when I first entered the doors. I think this article opened up my opinion of this place in a positive way. At first, when I walked inside i was like wth. There were booths that families could sit in with their legs crossed to be able to share a meal like they do over in Afghanistan. I have never seen this before and from what I read in the Inlander this is the first ever restaurant to serve the Afghanistan community with the food they serve in their country. That's amazing. I met the owner who opened the place. He is kind and humble. His wife I didn't get the pleasure to meet but from what I could tell she is a great cook and a kind person also. I know that many cultures struggle to find their way in America or to find a way to feel like they are at home even if it is just over a home-cooked meal with family or friends that are from the same country. This family has accomplished that. They have done a wonderful job at bringing a little bit of home to the United States for the Afghan community. I can tell they did this with nothing but love. I would recommend to anyone to read the article in the Inlander and to go into this place and meet the family that runs it. They show that with commitment and faith anything can happen. Also, they have a little shop attached that you can buy jewelry and other accessories in. For their hard work and dedication, I give this place an A+ rating. Support them.in their journey of being an American in such a big world...
