El Rayo Burritos Guacamole Restaurant — Restaurant in St. Charles

Used to love this place. Went in recently and it was horrible. I will not be going back! Went in like I always do with coworkers at lunch. The place was crazy packed like always. Everyone that was behind us in line got their food and we were still sitting at the table with no food(this was people who were doing take out and people who were eating in the restaurant both!!!) The couple sitting behind us actually had the same food we did and were behind us in line and got their food before us. We asked them for our food to go because we had sat for 35 minutes after ordering and our food never came. When we were waiting at the counter for our food, I had looked in the bag to see if all of our food was there as the girl had thrown it on the counter like it was ready to go. I was looking in the bag and the girl literally ripped the bag out of my hand! I was so appalled but over looked it and did not think much of it. When we got to work, we opened our food and all of it was inedible. We all had burritos and there was so much grease that the entire paper wrapping, foil and bag were covered in the grease! It was so disgusting. Three strikes and you are out in my book... really sad because when their food is gone it is really...

After driving past this little place hundreds of times for the past several years, we finally decided stop there for lunch on Wednesday.

They have a very large selection on their menu board, and lady working at the counter was very helpful when we were deciding what we would like.

We ultimately decided on 2 chicken tamales à la carte for each of us, as opposed to having full meals.

They were delicious, served wrapped in corn husks as they should be; along with complimentary chips and salsa.

The meat was tender, and lightly seasoned. There were a couple tough pieces, but overall the meat was good. The portion is a decent size and the rice is OK. The fried jalapeños (Chile's torreados) were large and plentiful. Overall the salsa for the chips has a smoked Chipotle flavor if you like that. I gravitate toward the green salsa, which was decent. The chips are from a bag, not home made unfortunately. There are no pickled carrots onions or jalapeños either, unfortunately.
