RUN from Mad Batter--they're just going to disappoint you.
One star for the least fortunate part of my experience--this bakery makes an outstanding product. It's a true shame.
After contacting this bakery via email on 1/31, we made a take-home wedding cake tasting appointment over the phone 3 weeks in advance, and then corresponded a bit back and forth via email over Valentine’s Day weekend to set our tasting flavors. At some point during that time frame, Mad Batter changed their weekend hours. My appointment was at 1pm Saturday 2/25--they now close at noon on Saturdays. No one told me, they just expected me to magically know despite having been in contact with me all along. I don’t live in Saint Charles and had never been to their establishment. The owner called me at 11:45am that day to tell me I needed to come get my owner because they’re closing soon. I live 40 minutes away. He didn't care--he seemed annoyed with me and had the audacity to ask me to pick up my food off the ground in the parking lot behind their establishment, so that he didn't have to take responsibility for his mistake and have someone stick around for an extra half hour. I said I wasn't comfortable with that, citing food safety and animals, and he scoffed, "ugh well, there aren't any animals out there, but I guess we'll wait for you," and never once apologized for the situation. That should've stopped us right there, but a sweet high-school aged girl stuck around and we picked up the tasting box. She was lovely. And the cake was incredible--that's what makes this all the more painful.
We emailed the bakery after agreeing to overlook the shaky start because the cake was too good to pass up, and set up a phone call to discuss pricing. On 2/27, we spoke with their consistently rude decorator. She’s always curt, but this time she was downright disrespectful. She had no answers to my questions, just kept putting the phone to her shoulder and asking someone else in the bakery, all the while making snide comments about me clear as day to her coworker. I pushed through, set my order price with flavors to be determined, and then hit the next brick wall--they'd have to call me back after asking the owner, who is also the delivery driver, if they would deliver to my venue. Mind you, the bakery knew all long where my venue was. I was asked over the phone at first contact and via email the day prior setting up this phone conversation. No employee notified me of a “strict policy to deliver within 30 min” at any point.
I get the call back--he won’t deliver. So I asked to speak with him directly, citing the above. He calls me back and tells me he really doesn't want to drive that far, it's "just such a pain," then agrees do it! Presumably because our order would be over $600. I was gracious and grateful; if I’d know there was a “policy” upfront, we never would’ve gone down this road. And if he hadn't called back and offered to deliver, they would've completely wasted a month of our time, and who knows if we’d get a baker half as good who still had our date available. So, cake tier sizes were set, and we were asked to send an email with pictures of cakes we liked along with our desired flavors—all pending a 4/15 meeting we had set with our venue coordinator. So, uneasily, we still decided to move forward and prepared to finalize our details.
Until today. After a month of silence thinking we'd found our baker, I got an email from him that, "after discussions with staff and the delivery driver"--HE is the delivery driver, he told me that himself--they wouldn't be able to take our order after all.
Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised and we've clearly dodge a huge bullet here. This bakery is just a giant red flag, and the owner doesn't care one bit about building or maintaining a...
Read moreLeaving a 4 star because there was a few very confusing mishaps during my ordering process that made me super uncomfortable, a little stressed, and frustrated. The communication wasn’t very clear with the ordering process and they also gave me stripes the opposite way that I asked. I even had sent a photo example for reference. THAT being said, the cake still looked great even though it wasn’t exactly what I wanted with the stripes, it still came out so beautiful ! They also did the right thing by not charging me additionally for their miscommunications, which they had said they’d do. Which is another reason I’m giving them a good rating. I reuse businesses who put the customers first, and they did. Overall, they accommodated my daughter’s dairy free restriction with the entire cake, which I’ve never met a bakery that would do so. Not only was it dairy free, beautiful , and tasted amazing !!!!!!!! The fresh strawberries in the cake were so good! I order about 3-4 cakes a year and I will certainly give them the benefit of the doubt and try again once more since the cake itself was great. Hopefully next time we can have a little better communication. Also, I’ve seen a lot of reviews on rudeness, I did not experience anyone being rude. In person or over the phone. The staff was all...
Read moreI recently ordered donuts from Mad Batter Bakery in St. Charles, IL for a baby shower, and the experience was nothing short of disappointing. From start to finish, the process was marred by poor communication, inaccurate pricing, and unprofessional service.
First, the ordering process was extremely frustrating. The bakery initially quoted us one price for the donuts but then, gave another quote 30% higher. When I arrived at noon for pickup, the agreed-upon time, I was met with a locked door. After knocking multiple times and calling the business three times without any answer, I waited outside with no acknowledgment or assistance. Eventually, an employee came out, expressionless, offering no apology or explanation for the delay, making me feel like my time and business were an inconvenience to them.
The donuts themselves were average at best—certainly nothing special, and comparable to what I could have easily found at Jewel or Whole Foods for a fraction of the stress. For a business that prides itself on quality and service, Mad Batter Bakery failed on both fronts. I would strongly advise others to look elsewhere for their bakery needs to avoid the same...
