This a standout for the area for sure! I've been and continue to go over and over because of location. But let's be clear this is NOT soul food. If you have a grandmother she might like it but your nana is turning up her face, nose, and plate. The food is very good southern, country food, but if you went to Mary Mac's or Busy Bee looking for soul food you would be similarly disappointed that reviewers don't know the difference between southern and soul food. The rutabagas are pretty freaking good as is the corn souffle, neither of which do you typically find on a soul food menu.
That said the food is pretty good although not always consistent. And though I've been eating here for a almost 2 years now, there is clearly a change in management if not a change of ownership from these glowing but sometimes harsh reviews of the service and offering from 3+ years ago. This is the best food in the area hands down which conflates these ideas into a stockpile of old and recent rave reviews. If you know what to expect you are getting, it's typically very good Southern cuisine.
The cobblers are a great example of a hit or miss treat. The Mac and cheese is awful, but nearly everything else is just plain good. But this place doesn't claim to be anything it is not, it is only the reviews that would mislead you. As a soul food lover, especially in the metro area, it is disappointing to not have a popular option in this Stockbridge area. I'm still searching as the more I eat here the less it appeals. But when your good options are limited you appreciate what you have. And this place is usually a good option.
Usually very crowded for take-out and parking is somehow never a problem although It almost always seems to be you will take the last spot. So it's always packed in the parking lot but usually heavy flow in and out. I believe you can order ahead but this is also a place that runs out of this and runs out of that alot.
Try the peach cobbler and pray for a good day. When it's on point, its great! Avoid the Mac n cheese, and save yourself the 💔 of the dumpcake. Fried chicken is consistent, good, but nothing special by any means. Cornbread is average. But again somehow the rutabagas do have some magic of all items. Oxtail is tasty, not worth the price here though, but most places nearby serving oxtails are Caribbean.
I continue to go here when I'm desperate for some comfort food but there is a reason why the frequency is constantly decreasing and everyone in my office is routinely pushing it way further down the "hey, do you wanna go to" list. If you have a short memory and are a hopeless romantic you...
Read moreI've eaten lunch here numerous times over a number of years. I've also introduced this place to my family, friends, & co-workers who chose to introduce it to their friends and others within their own individual social circles. The food is always good. It's fresh, hot, and well seasoned. The portions received with each order are adequate ( I sometimes even have leftovers to carry out). Although some specialty items are only offered on specific days, they still have a great variety of menu items daily. Everyone behind the counter has a great vibe. The chemistry between them seems genuine and is so friendly, helpful, and professional. I like this food & service of this place, so I gave it 4☆ . The only reason it's not a 5☆ is because the atmosphere isn't as cozy as I'd like. It doesn't feel inviting to me(but you can sit down and enjoy your meal). I also think that they can be a bit pricey sometimes. I once ordered a meal that came with: 2 pieces of meat, 2 sides, a roll, and I purchased the dessert(a slice of cake). I also added on an additional side item & dessert(a cobbler). My tab was a little over $30, and that's without any drink. At that time, I felt like thirty dollars is a bit on the higher end for a single lunch without even including a drink. And last but not least.....parking is a nightmare, so...
Read moreSo I hyped up this place up to my wife for about year before taking her about 4 weeks ago. And because she worked in Alpharetta, now midtown, I was excited that we had the occasion. Man o Mman, my wife was very disappointed because the only item she felt comfortable eating was her sweet potatoes and she had a four side veggie plate. The greens were salty, which I agreed, and the macaroni and cheese were very plain and dry. I had the fried pork chops which were paper thinny thin thin but tasty, did I mention the chop with "chip" thin. Sitting at the table while not being a regular customer of this establishment, I felt that a management change had happened. During my earlier visit, I became familiar with this restaurant's history. Interestingly as we were leaving, a lady was taking her husband inside and she mention that the restaurant was under new management. I wanted to say, "Under More than you know lady, more than you know." The cost cutting is very evident and I do not think they are going to make it like this. They are charging too much for this type of food. I can go to "Best Breakfast" for lunch and pay $5.50 for the same type of average Grub. Good luck, get it together and I won't be back for another...
