Skyline Chili is a bit of regional flavor out of Cincinnati, and is nothing at all like you might expect out of a standard bowl of red. If you're a first timer, being aware of this fact ahead if time will go a very long way towards getting around the not-at-all-spicy, but certainly spiced, concoction that will be presented to you.
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I've had an ongoing love affair with this dish, and this chain, for nearly a decade. It's one of those things that you will either love, and keep going back to, or hate, and never eat again. Being a hardcore member of the former group, I will occasionally seek out my nearest location, this one being the qualifying example, at present. The storefront is tucked away in a rather oddly-faced strip mall, which can make it a bit of a bear to find, but the location is clean and quiet, and the service walks that narrow line between empty drinks and overbearing service. Polite, personable, but never intrusive. The menu is simple, though it still has a respectable variety of types of dishes, expanding into non-chili dishes, dressed up hot dogs, and some plays on burritos, amongst some other various simple items. Of the various options I've tried, I have yet to be disappointed.
All that said, if you're a first timer, looking to get your feet wet in this wonderful world, I highly recommend ordering a "Way," a pile of spaghetti, topped with their chili, and sundry other items. Being a fan of this fare, my suggestion would be to dive into the deep end with a "5-way," consisting of pasta, chili, beans, diced onion, and more cheese than your cardiologist would feel comfortable with seeing you eat in one setting. Upon being served, turn the plate to portrait mode, give up on trying to twirl this monstrosity on your fork, and get down to eating. If you're hard in on certain conventions of the foods before you, this is going to seem a bit odd, but if you're all about that flexible thinking, you'll be fine.
It's at about this point that I'm expecting you, the reader, to be wondering why I'm going on so long about this, and, really, it's because you've probably never eaten this stuff. If you've been to a Skyline Chili, you already know the drill, and you skipped out once I confirmed that the place offers the to-be-expected experience. If not, well, this place may require a bit of priming, if only to avoid the gastronomic brain-bending that could otherwise lead a newbie to a bit of a shock on the first go-around.
So, if you've stuck with this essay of a review this long, you owe it to yourself to go try it. It's not nearly as intimidating as it seems having it explained to you by others, but there are a lot of assumptions you need to be willing to let slide, in order to get the best experience out of your first visit. Do that, and you'll either be a hardcore convert, or you'll know it's just not your thing, either way, you'll be experiencing a bit of legitimate, unpretentious,...
Read moreSkyline Chili is a charming spot that thrives on its friendly, welcoming staff and its reputation as a gathering place for regulars. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with smiles and genuine warmth, which adds a personal touch to the dining experience.
The restaurant itself is clean and well-maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere for a casual meal. As for the food, the chili is undoubtedly the highlight. It’s flavorful and generously topped with heaps of cheese, which is a signature element that Skyline fans have come to love.
However, some aspects of the food left room for improvement. The spaghetti, a key part of their classic three-way dish, was underwhelming. It was excessively wet, leaving a pool of water on the plate that detracted from the overall texture and presentation.
The chilidog was another mixed experience. While the chili and cheese complemented it well, the hotdog itself was disappointingly small—about half the size of a regular hotdog—and boiled, which seemed to diminish its flavor.
Overall, Skyline Chili is a decent spot for a quick bite, especially if you're a fan of their unique...
Read moreI love the food here. With that being said, ordered a bowl of chili with cheese and onions at the drive thru. Young lady passed me a clipboard so I could sign the receipt (with a place for the tip). Open up the chili only to find it is HALF EMPTY. I assume this is to leave room to put the chili and onions in which were on the side. However this was not a 2 dollar cup of coffee where you leave room for cream. This was 6 dollars plus. I expect the container to be reasonably full. I got 3 dollars worth of air. I always get the same thing on the rare occasions I go there because I consider it a treat. Not such a treat this time. Furthermore to try and guilt customers into leaving a tip at the drive thru is reprehensible and I'm just glad I didn't because I would have been doubly annoyed. If and when I return to this location I will specify for the container to be full and not half empty. I could have bought a pound of cheese and an onion at the store and...
