What a wonderful new addition to Downtown Sunnyvale. We loved the one in Pasadena and are excited to have our own Urban Plates here.
We got to try a limited menu during their pre-opening, however, their full menu is enormous and there's something for everyone on it (vegan, gf, omnivore). The food is quite pricy and the old adage "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here. Which makes this is a great place to host a business meeting, have cater your event, or whenever you can expense the meal to the company. Though it won't be our location for a weekly meal out.
Urban Plates is a counter order, they bring your food to you, kind of place so no waiters, but the runners were kind and helpful and attentive if we needed something and the managers were around frequently checking on everyone, they are eager to make a good impression. Bodes well for their future.
We were happy with what we chose. The chimichurri steak was particularly delicious, tender and the chimichurri sauce was way better than I make at home. The brussel sprouts were a tad too al dente for me, I like mine a little softer, but they were still good. The macaroni and cheese was a hit with my one year old for sure, it was cheesier on the bottom so recommend giving it a stir.
My wife's curry tofu was good. Tasted reminiscent of Thai yellow curry and the texture of the tofu paired well with the potato. It also had a nice kick to it, which was enjoyable and not overwhelming.
The mashed potatoes were buttery and the gravy was a wonderful addition. My son enjoyed both immensely. And yeah, he loves carbs. He also enjoyed the toasted bread a lot.
They gave us cookie samples and the Cowgirl one was by far the better one and I could have eaten another of those, their chocolate chunk being ok. I do look forward to being able to order their flourless chocolate cake or hummingbird cake as well, both of those were on display for later this weekend when they officially open.
They don't have a lot of seating, especially indoors, luckily this is California and the weather tends to be pleasant outside most of the year because their back patio has almost twice as much seating. It was a little sunny in spots, but that will change as other building as built next to it. The other oddity is that there seems to be only one entrance and exit at this time, so you have to walk past the line to get out again. This felt kind of odd. Maybe making it a two way with lanes would help clear this up?
Overall, there's room to improve in the small details (like the mango iced tea not tasting of mango enough) and I'm confident they'll earn a fifth star in my heart in a future visit and once their find...
Read moreWe were patiently waiting to try this restaurant since they opened . We saw the reviews & loved their food pics couldn't wait to try in person....
I was hoping to be not over crowded given it's Friday lunch time so very anxiously we proceeded through the downtown , due to the construction work going around in the area parking has become a challenge so we always park in the parking garage which has ample parking spaces I believe it's 4 hrs free parking which is great .
Before leaving home we had checked the menu so we knew exactly what to order ....plus they have kept an enlarged menu outside the restaurant at the main entrance which is so helpful because people like me who checks the entire menu first & then decide on what to eat becomes very stressful especially when u have the whole crowd behind u & ur compelled to decide quickly before ur turn comes ......
When we reached the restaurant there was little crowd ahead of us so we stood in line, we saw there were multiple staff at the order counter due to which the lines moved very quickly & there were ample seating inside the restaurant which we loved.
This is what we ordered from the plates which comes with 2 sides of ur choice-
Roasted Barramundi Sea Bass with roasted rosemary potatoes & basmati rice pilaf - it came with slice of rustic bread. Dish description- herb crusted BAP certified barramundi sea bass oven roasted and finished with housemade lemon hollandaise. I feel in love with the flavors every bite was delicious. Fish was so flaky , fresh , very light but very flavorful went very well with the roasted potatoes & rice pilaf the lemon hollandaise sauce was yummy...the sliced bread was really good....I also took some sriracha sauce from the self serve station for some added spice for my dish...can't wait to try this dish again....
My husband choose - Grilled Sustainable Salmon with mashed potatoes gravy on side & rainbow carrots & golden beets . It came with slice of rustic bread. Dish description- oven roasted with our rosemary agave sauce & finished with fresh parsley grilled asc certified north atlantic salmon finished with our housemade dijon honey sauce. I got a bite of salmon it was really good & the veggies & mashed potatoes with gravy were delicious . I loved the dijon honey sauce.
Overall we enjoyed our lunch experience here staff was very attentive & friendly. We will definitely come back to try their other...
Read moreThis wasn't my first time eating at Urban Plates, but it was the worst experience I've had there so far. I first dine there when they recently opened their Sunnyvale location and it was a relatively good experience. I subsequently ordered out from there another time and experience was similar although these two times I only ordered sandwiches.
Today I went there with my wife and my child and the experience was lackluster to say the least. My wife ordered the chimichurri steak plate with a side order of chicken breast for my daughter. I ordered the braised short rib.
The waitress taking an order was nice and respectful. When we arrive there my daughter needed a diaper change so my wife went to the bathroom to change her where she noticed there was no changing table.
Once our food arrived which was really fast.(Not long enough to cook a steak) My braised short rib was piping hot but my side mashed potatoes and gravy were lukewarm.
My wife's steak was cold, as well as her sides of brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. She then asked for another plate and informed the wait staff that her food was cold.
They then brought her out another plate a few minutes later where the steak and mashed potatoes were lukewarm at best. Also the mashed potatoes had large chunks of unmatched potato, about three pieces of whole potato. Her plate also included a piece of toasted bread that was no longer on her plate when they brought out her second attempt at a hot meal.
Also the side order of chicken breast for my daughter was also cold.
The flavor in the seasoning of the food was good but it was not enjoyable due to most of the meal being cold or lukewarm.
This was definitely a underwhelming experience especially after paying $70.
The atmosphere is decent although the chairs are very uncomfortable on the outside patio small metal very loud chairs.
After leaving the establishment myself, my wife, and my child were both experiencing stomach pains.
I have not been to the other Urban Plates locations but I do not recommend Urban Plates in Sunnyvale. If you feel like eating anything other than a sandwich or a burger.
I rate my experience 2 stars I will not...
