The Food On a random day, a friend wanted to get Afghan food, and we discovered Kabul Afghan Cuisine. Not sure why, but I was expecting it to be a mom and pop shop, but it turned out to be a slightly upscale restaurant. I ordered the Kabul's Combination Kabab with Lamb and Beef, along with Mantu as an appetizer to share. They have a pretty good portion size, and seem like all the dishes came with garlic bread. The Mantu was interesting, it came topped with different vegetables and spices. The Combination Kabab came with the garlic bread, skewered meat, and rice. (Note that the menu says Combination Kabab comes with lamb or beef with chicken. But you can also ask for lamb and beef.) Both dishes were flavorful and delicious. My friend and I were quite full afterward.
The Miscellaneous The restaurant is in the downtown area, but parking is not too hard to find. It is also close to the train station, so you can also train and walk. The interior of the restaurant gives an upscale kind of vibe, along with some decor. We got seated right away since there weren't many people. The servers were quite sincere and courteous. They have a good selection from their menu including vegetarian options. They have a decent portion size for their food. But the expectation was the food would be pricey because of the upscale environment. All in all, the food was pretty good and worth a try. I would return again to try some of...
Read moreSteer clear at all costs. I believed the reviews and went here to order takeout as I've just had a baby and have not had the bandwidth to cook. They packed Qabili Polau that had gone off so badly that when I opened the container, the stench of rotten food spread across the table. The odious smell alone would make anyone wretch but to make matters worse, when I called to let the manager know his food had gone off, and that I had especially gotten it for my mother in law who is here to visit the baby, the manager had the audacity to ask me where my mother-in-law was from and dismissed that his food had gone bad, justifying it by saying I did not know what I was taking about. I had to drive all the way back to the restaurant to show him the food and have him eat it, but he left the restaurant and instead called me while I was standing there at the restaurant and insulted me on the phone telling me that the food had not gone off and that I had eaten the food and was now here to take money back because I was cheap. Absolutely egregious behaviour and revolting that they serve food which had clearly been sitting out in the heat for hours and thus turned. His rebuttal was that he had been serving this food all day and I was the only one...
Read moreKabul Afghan Cuisine offers great Afghan food, a fine dining ambience, and exemplary service. We walked in at 6:30 pm on a Friday evening and immediately got a table with no wait time. Servers were quite courteous and prompt.
I got started with dough (a buttermilk-like drink) and the pakawra-e-badenjan appetizer (4 fried eggplant with yogurt but no meat sauce). Very filling and we realized later that we over-ordered, given how large the portions are for the entrees! We got the vegetarian platter which came with bread, variety of curries (spinach, cauliflower and pumpkin with yogurt) and an enormous plate of white rice (challow). When I say enormous, I mean even being a big eater myself it could've fed two people. The pictures don't do it justice since I dove in right away and only took pics after LOL.
For dessert, I got the firnee (this sweet pudding with cardamom) while my friend got the Afgani ice cream. Unbelievably flavorful and keeping in tradition with the entrees, huge portions. For the price, I can say this Afghan restaurant is certainly worth it for the experience and delectable cuisine. Highly recommend and will be coming here again. Happy to support Afghan restaurants particularly during these...
