I ordered desserts for takeout, and from the moment I walked in, the experience went downhill. The person who sold me the food was rude and dismissive. Then came the food—and it was downright disgusting.
I'm Peruvian. I know what Peruvian food is supposed to be. This wasn’t just bad—it was inedible. I have a hard time imagining how any genuine Peruvian could taste this and believe it’s remotely authentic, let alone good.
The alfajores were revolting. When I finally took a good look at them at home, I had to throw them away. They were buried under spoonfuls of powdered sugar when they’re supposed to have a light dusting. Even that couldn’t cover how dry and stale they were. The “manjar” inside wasn’t even real manjar. It was a crusty, dried-out substitute that could literally be peeled off in a hard, rubbery slab—like a caramel hockey puck. And there was barely any of it to begin with.
Then came the picarones—$10 for a few pieces that smelled like onions. Yes, onions. The smell was nauseating and hit before I even took a bite. I can only assume they reused oil from savory dishes, which is unhygienic and inexcusable.
They have a strict “no refunds” policy—and that makes sense. They know their food is bad, and they need to protect themselves from how often people must complain.
This place isn’t worth a single dollar, let alone the $10 they’re charging for these inedible abominations they dare to label as Peruvian desserts. Rude service, disgusting food, questionable hygiene, and zero accountability. A complete scam.
This was the most expensive Peruvian food I’ve ever paid for—and without question, the worst...
Read moreThe food was phenomenal. I came to Sylvia’s because of a friend’s recommendation to try some “authentic Peruvian food.” From outside, you might think that it is a small business, with few options, but once you come inside you will realize the variety of extremely delicious food they have. I could not take pictures of all the food me and my family ate, because it was so delicious that they ate it all before I took the picture. From what we ate I can recommend: arroz chaufa (AMAZING) tallarines saltados con carne (YOU COULD BASICALLY TASTE THE FLAMES), lomo saltado (will dream with the flavor) and an amazing JALEA MIXTA (with sus buenas salsitas). 100% recommended. Good food, good price, worth the trip. Waitress was very kind and made our experience even better.
PS: For all my Peruvians reading this, it also has Mayonesa, Uchucuta, Huancaina .. de la A la cena for sale, picaras, besos de moza, helados...
