Aesthetic Appeal Overshadows Culinary Disappointment at Capitol Diner
Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2.33 out of 5 stars)
My visit to the Capitol Diner was, unfortunately, more about style than substance. The exterior of the diner, a gleaming homage to classic Greek eateries, set expectations high. The cleanliness and attention to detail were promising, with the staff diligently polishing windows and fixtures. Alas, this meticulousness did not extend to the food or service.
Our server, while undeniably personable and pleasant, was marred by a lackadaisical approach. Interactions with us were interspersed with bouts of socializing and a disconcerting lack of urgency, resulting in delayed service and inattentiveness.
The food, too, was a letdown. The inconsistency in temperature was the first sign of trouble. Our soup and appetizers arrived lukewarm, despite a courteous response from our server about rectifying the soup temperature. This dish was not brought out with the others, furthering the impression of disorganized service. To our amazement, the server suggested this was due to a lack of attention in the kitchen.
The French onion soup, in particular, was a disappointment. It lacked the customary crouton and was insipid, hinting at a pre-packaged origin rather than a homemade preparation. The overall quality of the food was passable, but certainly not equal to the price tag.
The generous portions seemed more an attempt to justify the cost rather than a genuine effort to provide value. Large servings can't compensate for lackluster flavor and quality.
In conclusion, Capitol Diner seems to prioritize its aesthetic over its culinary offerings and service. The disparity between the meticulous presentation of the diner itself and the rather mundane food and service is a chasm that needs to be addressed. A beautiful setting can't mask mediocre food and service. Regrettably, as it stands, our $75 investment didn't feel justified.
While I appreciate the effort put into maintaining a clean and inviting atmosphere, I hope that equal pride and attention will be given to the food and service moving forward. For now, however, I find it hard to fully recommend the Capitol Diner.
My advice to potential patrons: come for the décor, but temper your culinary expectations.
Note: $12 was tipped on a $63 bill despite the experience...
Read moreCapitol Diner used to be one of my most favorite Diners to go to. Unfortunately, over the years their prices have increased (which I get it.. but this is a Diner. Not a fancy restaurant, people bring family and friends to Diners due to the affordability of the menu with a good quality and quantity of food.)
There's small upcharges for substituting a majority of the sides that come with a meal. The menu states what sides they give you... And then you get to search for the price of the upcharge for wanting a different side to go with your meal.
For certain side substitutes, this is understandable such as fries instead of chips...
But for every last substitute?? Having an upcharge??
That's a bit much.... A tad bit overboard for price gouging.
The overall taste of the food is more or less you know what to expect.. Its pretty basic. Which is actually a good thing for anyone with IBS or Acid reflux.
The hosts are friendly, the servers and bus boy/girls are too.
I've seen some servers however interact with who you could tell were "the regulars" verses customers who aren't regular visitors.
Granted not everyone wants to have a full blown conversation with others when their mouth is full of food...
Keep in mind tho that you never know when you're going to have a customer of whom is observant and noticing all the little things.
If you're not a regular customer, you get the nonchalant "how's everything going?, does anyone need a refill?, does anyone want dessert?"
To hear this... and see your server be more sociable with a table not to far from you... If you're unaware of how it works with regular customers verses non-regular customer's, One might actually feel quite unwelcomed.
As well as yeah.. a majority of people are on cellphones unfortunately 24/7. However there's a level of professionalism in the food and service industry to where to see the people who are to be at service of others more worried about their phones as well as talking to one another about what's on their phone..
Well... thats a tad bit unprofessional.
Hopefully in the future things will pan out... I really miss going to this diner as it used to be on my top 5 for places to bring my family to eat for...

Restaurant: Capitol Diner Location: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Food: The food at Capitol Diner exceeded my expectations. I tried the pancakes, Philly cheese sandwich, and a milkshake, and overall, it was a satisfying culinary experience. The milkshake was exactly what you would expect from a diner, thick and creamy. The Philly cheese sandwich was a standout, surpassing the quality of most similar dishes I've had before, especially considering it came from a diner. However, the pancakes were average, neither exceptional nor disappointing.
Service: The service at Capitol Diner was impeccable and played a significant role in making our visit memorable. The owner, whom I believe was the one attending to the guests, went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. He approached our table multiple times, genuinely interested in our well-being and eager to strike up a conversation. We shared our day's adventures, including a visit to Hershey Park and attending a wedding, and he took the time to engage with us. The waitress was equally fantastic, attentive and friendly throughout our meal.
Atmosphere: The true charm of Capitol Diner lies in its delightful atmosphere. It successfully captures the essence of a bygone era, radiating a quaint and "old-fashioned" ambiance. While the decor may evoke nostalgia, there was no sense of anything being outdated or run down. I can't express enough how much I wish more restaurants would embrace this style and bring back the joy it offers. The combination of warm hospitality, cozy surroundings, and a touch of nostalgia created a truly unique dining experience.
Overall: Our visit to Capitol Diner left us thoroughly satisfied. From the exceptional service to the well-prepared food, everything exceeded our expectations. The cleanliness of the establishment and the kindness of the staff further enhanced our dining experience. If I ever find myself in the Harrisburg area again, Capitol Diner would undoubtedly be at the top of my list for a return visit. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking a delightful meal in a charming and...
