One of the worst sushi restaurants Ive ever been to. The “sashimi platter” 35$ wasnt filling whatsoever. Everyone knows Japanese restaurants use frozen fish and their profit margins are higher than other restaurants because they can use the Japanese theme to demand more money. The sashimi was bland, didn’t taste that amazing, I doubt the fish was thawed daily. And the portion sizes dont justify the price. I’ll reemphasis this…tiny portions.

My friend ordered the rainbow roll 18$ …. TINY ROLL. I think theres a lack of competition in Tacoma because in Seattle there are places similarly priced where you get much more food, or just cheaper but still great flavor.

The place looks cool and the service wasnt bad. But their prices are just rediculous. Their ala carte menu is insane. 8.89$ for 2 pieces of yellow tail??? You can get 6 pieces in Miami of yellowtail (high cost of living) for 10$. Not 10$ for two pieces. There isn’t any part of that place that justifies the prices. Either make the food higher grade or lower your prices.

My friend got nauseated after going and I was stuck in the bathroom for an hour also.

Never coming back.

Also, picture attached. It’s zoomed in, the sashimi platter I got. The cuts of the sushi are very unprofessional. Theyre like blobs of sushi and they overcompensate with the tuna.

People go to a Japanese restaurant for strong (fresh) flavor, hospitality, high quality ingredients and a premium presentation. Look elsewhere if you want that type...

This is one of the first Sushi restaurants I ever tried. This was back in 2002-2003. I remember really liking this spot and I was in the area so I stopped by for a little nostalgia and I am glad I did. The sushi was AMAZING! A lot of places I liked when I was younger have changed owners over the years, and the quality has gone down hill, but not this place. Apparently they have the same owners and the fish was as fresh as I remember it being over 20 years ago! I will have to make an effort to come back when I can. The restaurant was also clean and had an excellent sign from the department of health (which I pay attention to when I eat out) that’s something they should put on delivery applications in my opinion but I digress. The staff were super friendly and this is by far the best sushi I have had in the south end lately. I use to go to a place I won’t name in Fife but this will be my go-to when I am in the area. Chef’s kiss! 10/10 in my opinion. Very fresh salmon, Tuna, legit California rolls, everything was perfect. I would love to hear a review about the teriyaki and Yakisoba if anyone has tried that. My wife is not a big fish eater but maybe I can get her to check this spot out if the other options are as delicious...

There are two kinds of sushi: Americanized Sushi, and traditional fish centered sushi. The Americanized Sushi is where you have a sushi covered with all kinds of sauces, flavoring, spices, etc, and rolled into a big rice roll. At this place you will have the opposite. When you order a certain fish, it's just the fish wrap with a little bit of rice. Focusing on the original flavor. Example when ordering a spider roll, you're getting a soft shell crab with rice. Not a whole lot of fluff, or excessive flavoring distracting you from the original flavor of the crab. Likewise tuna, salmon, and any other fish. The rolls are smaller here, and the flavor is more simple, but more focused on the actual fish itself. It's smaller rolls of fish-focused rolls and not a giant roll of everything all together you can't tell which is which, or puffed up rolls with a mouthful of cream cheese. So if you want the more traditional and focused taste, eat here. If you want the lavish American style overly sauced in flavored distracted sushi rooll with cream cheese, go elsewhere.

For reals. Try some sushi that's just about the fish, not about the fluff. Let your tongue actually taste...

Sushi Tama has been our go-to sushi restaurant in Tacoma for over 20 years! While it has a small dining room, the food is delicious and always made with care and attention to detail. It is always spotlessly clean and the service is excellent. You should try to make a reservation in advance or come during a less busy day of the week. Even at 4:30 it might already be packed. However it is well worth the wait. It might not be as upscale as some other restaurants but it has a comfortable feel to it that puts you at ease. Food might take a little longer than at other places at times but again, it’s worth the wait. It’s a wonderful place for a date night or evening with good friends. It might not be the best option for really active little ones in the family, but if you do take them just make sure to bring things to keep them entertained and happy.
