Yesterday was another trip for PT and to modify the exercises yet again after they went terribly wrong three weeks ago. They were too much, too soon. Then it was off to find breakfast.
The Best of Pierce County competition is going on right now, so what better thing to do but go to the places who have been nominated and check them out. This is how we discovered Grit City.
Caleb, the bartender and our server, greeted us immediately and gave us our choice of tables. There was only one other customer so that was easy.
Menus, water and coffee were brought to the table. Caleb came back after checking on his other diner and bar customers and took our order. I ordered Chicken Fried Steak, scrambled, and breakfast potatoes, with sourdough toast. Ray ordered Smothered Breakfast potatoes and added 2 scrambled eggs. Caleb asked if we would like cheese on our potatoes and we both said yes.
Our meals came out quickly and made to order. I asked if my eggs had cheese. Caleb said yes and that they were mixed into the eggs. I could see the cheese mixed in with Ray’s eggs and could definitely taste cheese which I could not taste in my eggs. Not a deal breaker.
The kitchen must have the same toaster as mine at home where you have to push the button more than once. My toast was more like warm bread, not a deal breaker but definitely not toasted. The chicken fried steak was very good. Crispy, but not overdone, with flavorful gravy.
Ray didn’t say too much about his breakfast. There was an ample enough serving that he was able to bring some home. No complaints but no raves either.
The coffee was good and strong, just the way I like it. Ray liked his too.
When Caleb brought the check I told him my eggs did not have cheese in them. I also told him I was not going to die on the hill of a $.99 add on; I just wanted him to know cheese had not been added. Caleb immediately removed the charge and afterwards realized he had cooked us our coffee as well. A very nice gesture, thank you.
The service was good, the background music was made up of almost all of my favorite songs from the 70’s, and not so loud as to make conversation impossible.
I would be willing to come back and explore some of the other menu options. Thank you to Caleb for great service and...
Read moreSo far, not good... We were seated.. Three other parties came in after us, including one large party of 10 people.. All three of those parties have been waited on by a server, almost immediately after sitting, and their drinks and breakfast orders taken... We are still sitting here... No one has come to the table, no one has offered us drinks.
When the server showed, 20 minutes after we were seated, she started taking our order, then stopped because something was weird on her device. We waited another few minutes while she disappeared, then went to help another table before returning to us, still no drinks and they are out of steak and sourdough bread
1/2 The party of ten has finished their meal, the plates are cleared and they are in they second round of drinks... We are still waiting for food. The remainder of the party food did just showed up, after we finished eating
The food: the good news is it's cheap. The bad? Tiny portions more fitting of a childs menu (unless you're eating the chicken fried steak which appears to be an adult portion) The French toast and bacon were cold, the eggs and potatoes were okay.. the meat burrito was 95% eggs and potatoes with a small portion of meat... the food is basic....
For us it's not worth coming back, but maybe your experience will be different than ours...
(Note, those plates are sized halfway between a saucer and a...
Read moreWe came here for breakfast, we were met with rude service and unable to get our waitresses attention throughout the experience. Weren’t seated for over 10 minutes and then told to “choose our seats” after waiting for her. We received our drinks, and the Bloody Mary did not have bacon as stated on the menu, when we mentioned this- she ignored us and then later said “you never said your drink was wrong”…. When our food came out, almost two hours later, it was cold, and incorrect. We told her it was wrong, and she argued with us saying that the menu “did not include potatoes and eggs as a $5 add on.” When we rechecked it- it absolutely did say that. She blamed this issue on her manager and said he would fix the computer, but did not apologize or make any effort to fix the issue and bring out the food we ordered. When i went to pay, i could see her and the manager talking, i asked to talk to him. During our conversation the manager was rude, and did not make any effort to fix or apologize for the reoccurring issues we had throughout our breakfast experience- instead he said you didn’t say anything to the waitress (although we did…) and that there was nothing that could be done to fix it. We will never go back. But if you chose to, be aware of bad service and a manager who will back up his staff no matter the facts of...
