Review of Toh-Lee, Hotel Nikko Guam
We were excited to try Toh-Lee for the first time, especially since we had won a $100 gift certificate during the Father’s Day brunch at Magellan this past June. We almost gave the GC to a family member, but at the last minute we decided to use it ourselves. I called the day before and booked a 6:00 pm reservation.
When we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly and seated us quickly. Drinks and appetizers came out within about 20 minutes. The appetizers were very good — flavorful, nicely presented, and gave us hope that we had discovered a new spot to enjoy as a family. At this point, we were one of the first tables there, but the restaurant quickly started filling up.
Unfortunately, that’s where the good part ended. Our main dishes never arrived. We waited 40 minutes after finishing the appetizers, watching other tables around us get served, while our kids grew hungrier and hungrier. We tried several times to flag down staff; eventually our server came, and we asked for a follow-up. By then, we were frustrated, the kids were restless, and we had had enough — so we decided to leave.
At checkout, we explained the situation. The cashier and host did apologize, but our bill — for five small appetizers and drinks (3 mango juices with refills and 2 fountain sodas) — still totaled the entire $100 certificate.? The appetizers ranged between $6 and $11, so the math didn’t seem to add up. Despite the apology, no effort was made to adjust the charge, offer a comp, or smooth things over.
This was our first visit to Toh-Lee, and sadly, it left a poor impression. The appetizers themselves showed promise, but the combination of missing entrées, long waits, and disappointing checkout resolution ruined the experience. We stay and dine at Hotel Nikko often, but this was an unexpected and unfortunate low point.
We wanted to like Toh-Lee, and we really did consider making it a regular spot for our family. But after this first experience, we’re hesitant to return.
The appetizers have 3 stars. We did not receive our main course.
Service was 2 stars because before it got filled we were not forgotten.
Beautiful Atmosphere but what is a beautiful atmosphere and view...
Read moreLet's start with the best part: the view is spectacular! Only a select few places have a view that is both encompassing (oh those sunsets!) and at the perfect elevation to be both unobstructed and breathtaking, and this is among the best.
Now let's get to the real deal - the food. As a bonafide Chinese restaurant, you might find it sorely lacking. Sure, there are the two or three dim sum pots, but where is the rest of the selection? Here you will find mainly garden fare islandy buffet courses which have nothing to do with the premise of a Chinese (or Asian for that matter) establishment. Albeit sometimes they DO come up with the unexpected sleeper hit, you might want to go elsewhere, say Kar-Kar in Tamuning for...
Read moreThis place is a gem. It is a great place to take your small family, partner, or a few friends. However, this place has a very mellow vibe, so if you want to go somewhere you can just sit and converse over the table, rather then grab a quick bite, this is the place to go. My parents and I came to try this place out last night, when they served a la carte. We ordered ten different things from the menu to try them out, and not a single one of them was below great. It is high end Chinese food. I'm not over-exaggerating, but even their water was special. It was so soft- unbelievable. Dad and I were so caught up in how good their WATER was. Excellent food, excellent service. I am definitely...
