When you book a Westin, you expect a certain level of quality—clean, well-maintained rooms, thoughtful service, and an overall polished experience. Unfortunately, this hotel didn’t meet that standard.
We arrived late at night and didn’t have the energy to ask for things that should have already been taken care of—the basics you expect when walking into a hotel room for the first time. I was expecting the Westin standard, but the room didn’t feel fresh or clean, and that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
The hotel itself felt worn down, and upkeep was inconsistent. I won’t repeat what others have said about the elevators, maintenance, and service, but my experience aligns with their concerns. However, the housekeeping situation was especially disappointing.
Yesterday, after requesting housekeeping, someone finally came to “clean” our room around 5pm. They made the bed—and that was it. They didn’t clean the bathroom, didn’t pick up dirty towels, didn’t wipe the sink, didn’t clean the floor, and didn’t leave fresh towels. We are staying at a Westin, a clean room with fresh towels is a minimum.
I went downstairs to the front desk to address the issue, expecting at least an apology or an offer to send someone back to properly clean the room. Instead, the front desk staff simply walked to the back, returned with a stack of towels, and handed them to me—no apology, no acknowledgment of the issue, just towels for me to carry back to my room. At that point, I almost wanted to ask if they’d like me to grab a mop and broom while I was at it.
While the staff were generally sweet, they struggled with basic service. The hotel wasn’t busy, yet when we went down to a nearly empty beach, they told us they had run out of beach towels and had no idea when they’d have clean ones. We asked if they could bring some to our room once available, and they assured us they would. After waiting, following up twice, and receiving more apologies, the towels never arrived.
The hotel advertises five restaurants, but at any given time, about half of them are closed. The only restaurant with a direct ocean view (which should be a highlight of staying at a beachfront hotel) was closed the entire time. The Japanese restaurant was open, but despite being nearly empty, it still took over an hour to get food to us and the one other table in there. Between the limited dining options and slow service, eating at the hotel felt more like an inconvenience than a perk.
Out of curiosity, we visited the Dusit Thani, and I’d strongly encourage Westin’s management to do the same. From the moment you walk in, the difference is clear—everything from the atmosphere to the attention to detail is on another level.
I’ve stayed at many Westins, and unfortunately, this one fell far below the brand’s usual standards. If a hotel is going to charge luxury prices, the experience should reflect that.
If you’re looking for great restaurants, unobstructed beachfront views, and a relaxing, well-maintained atmosphere, the Dusit Thani is a far better choice. The Westin’s loud, uninviting music, inconsistent service, and lack of attention to detail make it hard to justify staying here.
The staff were kind, but service was frustratingly unreliable. Also, be careful booking an “ocean view” room—ours technically had a view, but we had to step onto the balcony to see past a concrete parking lot. Overall, I expected much more from a Westin, and I won’t...
Read moreVisually, a very nice hotel on Guam. The lobby is open and sophisticated with impressive glass elevators going up and down the center corridor are beautiful. There are 2 tourist shops and a cafe in the lobby. There is a 5th glass elevator next to the cafe that has stunning views of Tumon Bay. There are 21 floors from the lobby on up with the penthouse suites and the Westin Club on the top floor. The lower 4 floors contain restaurants (italian, japanese, and the buffet style restaurant called Taste), a daycare, gym, and conference rooms.
The standard rooms are clean and have balconies. Due to how it is situated on hotel row, you will have nice views of either upper Tumon (Nikko Hotel and north) or the rest of hotel row. Everyone will have at least partial water views. The main issues I have with the rooms: 1) the shower curtain is 2 feet too short and 2) the toilet plunger required considerable force to flush. It is clear that the maintenance team reused the shower curtain due to ripped holes. You are a 5 star hotel. Please spend the $5 for a new shower curtain.
Otherwise, the pool area is nice with a 3ft, 4ft, and 5ft area. This is not for your daily swim exercise, but rather for fun. There is also a hot tube area. Access to the beach is very convenient and like the rest of the hotels, have imported very fine sand to make the beaches nicer than what was original to the area. Go to Ypao Beach (public) and you will see the difference. Cabanas are available thru the Westin Club and there are a limited number of shaded beach chairs. There is also a small hut that provides for profit scuba/snorkle adventures, kayaking, sail boating, and paddleboarding.
I sampled Taste's dinner buffet on a Saturday night. I believe ot is about $50/adult. I was there with 10 adults and 5 children and the total was about $650 with the service charge. They have an area wherw you can have the chef cook up their array of seafood (various fish, squid, shrimp, crabs, and some sort of giant shrimp that tasted like lobster). There is a second chef that can cook up similar seafood in soup. You have the choice of either a tom yong broth or tom kar (coconut-milk base) broth. The tom ypng broth was very salty. The tom kar was decent. Treat them like sauce instead of soup and your expectations will be met. Taste also offers a breakfast buffet for a crazy $27/person. Actually, thats a good price considering room service continental breakfast is $23.50 and a basic 2 eggs, 1 meat, hash browns and a grilled tomato are $29.50.
One note on tips/service charges--check your receipt to see if it is already included. Guam tourism caters mainly to the Asian cultures that do not tip. As an American, I nearly doubled tipped. The service chargw is usually 10%. Go ahead and add extra if you feel the service was good, but read those receipts carefully!
My overall stay (3 days 2 nights) at the Westin was a good one. 4/5 stars. Would I come back? Yes. Would I eat...
Read moreI visited in June 2021 and completely forgot to post my review, which was in my draft notes waiting for me.
Now that I am back in Guam (at a different hotel since the Westin was booked out), I have some time to reflect and complete my review, albeit a year late! :D
When I checked in my government travel card was declined!! Not thinking anything of it, I just asked them to use my personal card. About two days later when I was able to check my account, I realized that I had met my limit; I had to call to have my limit increased. The hotel had tried twice since I checked in to charge my card and each time it was declined. I did not know of the other attempts since no one from the hotel called me. Once I got back to the hotel from a day working, I informed them that my card should be good by tomorrow (15th June 2021 Guam time) since it was still Sunday in Hawaii/mainland US. The receptionist was really understanding and didn't even sweat me. She just stated that she will make a note of it and they will try again tomorrow.
This was a time when a lot of covid-related restrictions were still in place. Masks were required, a lot of buffet-style eateries were still closed, and a lot of normal hotel/beach activities were suspended or reduced. Thus, not much was going on at the hotel and surrounding area.
The hotel looks great on the outside and in the regularly-used common areas but it is clear once you get to the room that it is time for some upgrades. Even in some of the stairways, it seems like there was water damage or some areas were just abandoned/forgotten (I wish I saved the pictures I took). Perhaps it is a affect of the pandemic and reduced staff?
Elevators (4 cars), can get a bit slow for the amount of guests requesting lifts to their rooms. I took the stairs once to go down from my room and they looked a bit sketchy. I tried using the stairs going up because there was a long wait and crowd for the elevators but I got sent back because the stairs didn't access the guest rooms from the main lobby area.
Parking is in a ground level/underground garage. Parking in the evening is challenging. At one point, all the parking slots were full and I had to circle a few times before finding someone who was leaving to take their spot.
Housekeeping comes everyday without prompting.
The beach here is nice. Just go to the lobby floor and out through the pool area. You can grab towels from the pool area too. I was lucky enough to see a blue starfish (blue!! Have you ever seen a blue starfish?) and a sea cucumber. How cool is that?!?
The hotel is conveniently located near T Galleria By DFS. There are a bunch of high-end stores offering duty-free goods. Micronesia Mall is nearby too. I guess everything is nearby since the island is so small. But, it's...
