We've stayed at the Westin Tempe several times and really enjoy the hotel and Skysill Rooftop Lounge. The views are incredible, especially at sundown. The pool is small, seating is limited, and finding shade on a hot sunny day can be difficult, but it is a great place to chill.
Now for the bad part. The service is ridiculously slow. The bartenders seem more interested in talking to the other staff than pouring drinks. As other reviews have said, they employees tend to stand around and talk instead of serving the customers. This bar could make a killing in profit if it had bartenders and servers that were interesting in actually working the room. There is limited space at the bar so we had hoped that the servers walking around would come and take our order. After waiting more than 15 minutes and trying our best to get their attention, we had to go up to bar to order our drinks. (FYI, the "cool deck" is less than cool on hot, sunny days. If you do not have shoes/sandals on your feet, they will burn.) Even after ordering a round of drinks, the staff take forever to come around and take reorders. I would say that management needs to spend some time up there to get the staff working, but I've seen the managers up there and they are also just hanging out and chatting it up.
Our last night there, we went up to the pool for some late evening drinks and a little hot tub time. We got setup around the hot tub and after about 20 minutes, we finally were able to flag down an employee and asked if they were still serving. He seemed shock that we would ask but we explained that we've been trying to get someone to come by and take our order. While we were up there, we counted at least 8 different hotel employees just hanging out. Some were servers "working" the bar/pool area, others looked they might have been random hotel employees. We even saw a couple of facilities guys that were up there to take in the music and atmosphere. Maybe they were off their shift, but it is not a good look to that many employees lingering about and no one helping the customers. As I said, this bar could make a lot of profit if they just put in a little effort. It's hotel priced drinks and food, the profit margins should be pretty decent, you would think there would be some hustle to get customers to rack up a nice little tab so the servers could score a healthy tip.
We will go back, because we really like the hotel, but we'll keep our expectations at a minimum with regards to service at the rooftop bar. The atmosphere is 5 star, the service is 1...
Read moreThis was one of the worst food and beverage experiences of my entire life.
Literally. Just everything about it is awful. From the moment I walked in. There is no hostess or greeter of any kind. I walked over to the bar where I was confronted by no less than 4 employees lounging against the bar, none of whom greeted me. I walked over to what appeared to be an empty seat. I asked if it was taken. It was. I walked over to the four employees who all studiously ignored me. I wandered out to the area with couches and sat down and was completely ignored for 20 minutes despite the fact that it wasn't busy.
Finally, a server approached us and took our order. The drinks were $15 and terrible and appeared to have no alcohol whatsoever. The menu is extremely limited, basically bar snacks. We ordered Ahi tacos and Short Rib Sliders, both of which were $18. They were served in a tiny cardboard box with no garnish or side. My companion said the ahi tacos were ok. My short rib sliders were dreadful. Three tiny hard disks with a less than an ounce of meat, no sauce and the slider buns tasted like they had been microwaved and dried out. Really sad. It was like something you would get at a happy hour for free. Out total bill for 2 watery drinks and 2 tiny little snacks was $71. I can't believe a Marriott property would serve food like this. I mean just look at the picture of these sliders!
In addition to the terrible food and drinks and service, I really have to comment on the ambience. This is an absolutely gorgeous space. 18th floor rooftop, spectacular views etc. They have absolutely destroyed it by putting a giant TV at one end of the patio that is a) super bright and b) super loud. It's so bright that you literally can't see any of the gorgeous view and the deafening volume makes it the opposite of relaxing.
MARRIOT, why in god's name would you take this beautiful space and destroy it with this stupid big screen TV and turn it into a lame, expensive sports bar? Why would you serve this disgraceful food? And why would you staff it with employees who are openly contemptuous of the customers? Unfortunately, I can see by the reviews that our experience was more typical than unique. That's tragic.
I've stayed at and patronized Marriott properties all over the world. This is literally the worst run Marriott operation I've ever seen.
Nice...
Read morePretty disappointed at this place now to be honest. I’ve been here a total of about 4 times, all with members of family that have visited and/or those in town.
The first time I came it was fairly new and had great service with no food on menu as of yet (completely understandable). Second and third time was a quick stop prior to either taking family to airport or to a quick bite to eat elsewhere. Fourth time was a HUGE buss with my husband father in law and myself prior to a comedy show.
Views are always the highlight, love how it shows the Arizona flatlands. Got to see unexpected fireworks off in the distance. Unfortunately, the service here is the worst part. Bartender is very observant of those around him. I literally watched multiple couples come to the bar to sit and order and just walk away after waiting so patients for acknowledgement. Waitresses/waiters on the outskirts of your sitting near the pool, tv or edges are only responsive if you ordered food and don’t do a great job bussing completed plates. Lastly, it’s a pretty nice night in Arizona tonight (86 degrees with 30% humidity) and the misters are on. Everyone around us are complaining about being wet but they stay on full blast at 9:30 at night.
Overall, I’m a little disappointed and hope you guys can change it up. I understand, it’s June, college is out for the summer so your normal folk aren’t here, and it’s locals pretty much at this point but it’s a great spot and we want to come but gotta figure out service issues and find some people who will do their best when there is still...
