Booked due to good reviews, especially about cleanliness. The hotel’s newness also influenced my decision. We stayed at the hotel 2x within 1wk. Upon entering the rm, we immediately discovered a rumpled towel/robe left behind. This led me to question whether the rm was serviced. I calmly explained that while we weren’t upset, this detail and others, made us suspect that the rm wasn’t properly cleaned. This suspicion was strengthened when we inquired about the rm’s last service & they were unable to find the housekeeping record (yikes!). We also informed them that our safe wasn’t working. The front desk was apologetic & professional throughout the ordeal. In addition to promising to send housekeeping and maintenance to our rm immediately, they discounted our 1st nt’s rate by 20%. Upon return, we found that maintenance hadn’t fixed the safe. This wasn’t a big deal & gave a polite reminder. As we waited for maintenance (a long time), we began to get ready for bed. Due to the rm’s set up, we were concerned that they would come while we showered; however, as it grew later postponing became increasingly inconvenient. As feared, maintenance did arrive as I attempted to shower. SIDENOTE: The rm has barnyard doors that divides the shower/toilet from the rm’s entrance/vanity, and another door that separates the bdrm area. These doors are NOT level & roll open. My husband stood guard outside the shower rm door to keep it from opening. They swapped the broken safe completely for another by changing the drawer since the safe is bolted. The “new” safe also didn’t work. Ultimately, they left W/O FIXING the safe but promised to return. During my shower, I discovered more merit to my suspicions as I stood in standing water since it wouldn’t drain properly; as a result, I continuously turned the shower off & on to allow for drainage – very chilly solution. Additionally, there was hair stuck to the shower walls and some tiles protruded seemingly broken. The seal around the toilet was disgusting, as well as the sink’s overflow hole. While complimentary tea/coffee was given, we didn’t use it as an attempt to make tea proved that it isn’t regularly cleaned either. There were also stains on the walls and rug. All in all, while the room had a surface clean appearance it had likely not been “cleaned” for quite awhile. As we got ready for bed, maintenance finally came to tell us that they were unable to complete the fix (surprise!) and would return the next day. They also provided a $30 food/bev comp card for the inconvenience. The gentleman that delivered it was again apologetic. The next morning, I spoke with a manager. I calmly explained all of the events and stressed our dissatisfaction at the quality of our stay; especially at a cost of $634.96 for 3nts not incld the cost of valet at $34/day b4 tax (no self-park). The manager appeared to be genuinely concerned and immediately made efforts to rectify the situation. First, she offered an alternative rm on a higher floor. Then, she comped our 1st nts stay entirely. We very much appreciated her professional yet personable demeanor. While these issues were very real and should immediately be assessed, we would be remiss to overlook the efforts made by Canopy (Tempe) to resolve our issues. All staff remained professional, and our displeasure was solely at the circumstances. For the above reason, we returned for 1nt. We were optimistic that a return stay would have a different outcome. While not like the 1st, it wasn’t w/o issues – thankfully smaller. While the room was cleaner, the bathroom door was obviously broken yet left for guests; this is a hazard, as I even scratched myself on the broken & protruding wood. The vanity walls could use more care from left over makeup/toothpaste/etc. stains from previous guests (gross!). Overall, the hotel has a nice aesthetic. The rms have the same potential but a serious investment in proper room upkeep/housekeeping processes would drastically improve its overall quality to...
Read moreReally enjoyed our recent stay at the Canopy by Hilton Tempe.
We were greeted pleasantly at check in, were offered an upgrade (a NICE one which we took advantage of), and the process was smooth and efficient as well. Room was great, I pointed out a lot of details in my previous review, I love the lighting, the labeled master and coffee switches, comfortable bed with big fluffy pillow, nice big TV with streaming capabilities, well functioning air conditioning, ample closet space, and excellent bathroom. Having two towel hooks (minimum) is a HUGE bonus for me, because we’ve stayed at so many nice hotels who still overlook the functional need for two hooks. But the bath products are great, the shampoo and body wash both smell great, and they’re easily accessible affixed to the shower wall and in easy reach right above the sink as well. Didn’t even need to use any of my electronics chargers, because there were plenty of conveniently placed USB ports.
I do want to point out the exceptional - and I mean exceptional - housekeeping service. I mean, the service overall at this hotel is stellar, just consistently excellent, but even at THAT standard, I don’t think in all these years, I’ve ever had a room serviced by housekeeping so quickly after I requested it! And on top of that, the staff here did it cheerfully - we frequently get a ton of attitude when requesting housekeeping service at other hotels, responses like “look, our housekeeping staff service rooms during these hours, and we can’t say when yours is gonna be done - and don’t ask us to.” That’s the kind of attitude I’m used to. It it’s taken hours in many cases. At the Canopy by Hilton Tempe, housekeeping service was not only provided quickly, but was performed incredibly well - the room was spotless, sheets freshened, sink and shower areas all clean and shiny, very nice thorough job.
I liked the text messaging channel of service delivery, too. I don’t think there was a single staff member we interacted with who didn’t greet us cheerfully (and there was some OUTSTANDING staff - Caitlin, Andrew, and not sure if the front desk woman was Caitlin or if I just didn’t get her name, sorry) and that includes the restaurant side at Alter Ego, the service there knocked my socks off.
I even liked the ice makers - you get 3 options (just ice, just water, combo) and you put the bucket under the dispenser and if it doesn’t automatically dispense, you hold your room key card against the back, behind the bucket. Pretty cool!
So let’s get to the restaurant, another nice component at the Canopy. The Alter Ego dinner was one of the most memorable I've ever had. First of all, they were EXTREMELY accommodating to us, which alone really pleased us. But the EXPERIENCE was FANTASTIC. It was my birthday dinner. The food was wonderful, and Cody was our server, and he REALLY made it an experience I'll never forget. I really liked his personality, he was so attentive, he guided us through the menu with excellent advice, AND he whipped up an after dinner drink for me based solely on a brief conversation about what I like, and I LOVED the drink (now known as the watermelon white linen) and took one back to the room. He was a lot of fun and made the experience wonderful and memorable. My wife had the charred scallion meatballs served atop the crispy noodles. Wow. CHOCK full of flavor, definitely a kick to it, so flavor and spice. I had the airline chicken and it was excellent as well. The chicken wings were surprisingly good, though, as the appetizer. Crispy, tender, and flavorful. Excellent garlic chili and Korean BBQ dipping sauces come with it. Wow. BIG hit with us. The excellent food certainly contributed to the experience but Cody and the service he delivered will probably stick in my mind more than even the great food. We couldn't be more pleased with the dining experience and it was a great birthday dinner.
Really love this hotel, and guess we just have to come back. ...
Read moreDaniel Whitley and his team at Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown were responsive since our first outreach to them before our quick ramp up to a 2024 October business conference. We talked and received enough information to schedule a site visit where we were shown around the facilities with the catering manager, Kierra Winston. The hotel is attractive, eco-friendly and in a great location in Tempe with lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. I didn’t use a Canopy loaner bike but did hike up “A” Mountain only a few blocks away! The lobby is very attractive with an academic theme since ASU is nearby which is clever but not overbearing. There is a lobby bar-restaurant called Alter Ego and outdoor patio facing University Dr. The 13th floor conference area was open and airy with large windows showing the mountains from windows on both sides. The larger Varsity Ballroom worked great for multiple one on one meetings connecting the attendees for business discussions. Across the hall was a smaller room, The Study, useful for education or discussion with a classroom set up. Both rooms could be closed off if needed for privacy and are next to The Pantry where break snacks are set up. It’s a nice kitchen area plus an inviting with comfy chairs and low tables. Elevators and restrooms down the hall plus a nice work out room with a view.
Our experience at the actual conference started with a team meeting including heads of all department)s like Housekeeping and AV. Kierra went over the entire agenda (copies had been printed out for our team members) with us again and we made some minor time adjustments with no problem. We had what we needed for our set up and when some random request came up I could contact Kierra as my key person on Kipsu. She would quickly respond or send someone specific right away who could address the issue. Anything that was a bit tricky she handled very professionally and politely as did Daniel, Amy or any of the housekeeping staff that was around. The HVAC and AV teams were ready to help ASAP with anything that came up as well.
We had an offsite group activity one night and the Canopy offers a great parking/loading space. It was very safe for the attendees to board on the side near the valet parking area for our chartered bus to access.
The 14th floor with the Rooftop Patio, Alibi Bar and pool area was perfect for dining and socializing for our smaller group of about 45 people. It's really a gorgeous space with views of the lights of Phoenix all around after dark. We utilized those spaces for a 2nd night reception, breakfast and one lunch.
Lastly, the accommodation for our CEO was the Dean Suite which were especially nice. It offered a spacious living area with seating around a large tv, pool table, conference table and a kitchen area with roomy seating around a bar. Really good-looking space with great views that was useful for team meetings, impromptu business meetings and after-hours gatherings to play pool. There was a bathroom in the main area with the large bedroom, bath and hall closet area separate behind a closed door. Nice bath products plus robes were available and the quality clothes steamer was a nice addition.
I would recommend the Canopy for these aesthetic and logistical reasons plus the attentiveness and eagerness of the staff from...
