I went to go eat here with my niece, and I went because of the ratings, I was so unimpressed. I decided to order one of the sandwiches, and I don’t like butter. So I told the girl at the counter I did not want butter on my sandwich, she said we don’t put butter. I said OK that’s fine. I said, but you do put pate, correct? She said no??? Now I understand that that’s one of the things that makes a Vietnamese sandwich a Vietnamese sandwich. I went ahead and ordered it anyway along with a side order of salt and pepper chicken wings. The sandwich was kind of skimpy. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. It was very dry so I went to the front and asked if they could give me some Maggi, neither the boy or the girl that were there knew what I was talking about! I asked him please go in the back and ask the cooks if I can have some. They did and they brought it out and I added it to my sandwich. Now the chicken wings were really nice and crispy, however it literally tasted like they had just been over salted and over pepper. Fact of the matter is that I didn’t even deem them edible and because they were so salty I didn’t even wanna take them home and give them to my pet because that’s too much salt. Needless to say you know it wasn’t terrible but it sure as heck was not good. There’s a lot better in...
Read moreI was quite skeptical when I saw that Viet shack has a perfect 5-star rating on yelp - that is very difficult for any restaurants to achieve and I saw for myself why they have earned that rating. In my opinion, Viet shack is not just the best Vietnamese cuisine in Tempe/Phoenix, they are one of the best authentic Asian American cuisine in Phoenix, period. Could not believe how fresh and delicious their food is with their unbelievably competitive pricing!
I got their spring roll appetizer and while there was a bit more lettuce than what I find at a Viet restaurant, it was still quite delicious. For my entree, I ordered their lemongrass pork vermicelli noodles and it is probably one of the best ones I have had. You could tell they do good business as the pork meat was tender and more on the fresh side of things (whereas I am so used to many places using cheap meats), and both the noodle texture and freshness of the vegetables were spot on.
Had I not limited myself to one cuisine type limit on this trip, I would have returned to Viet shack at least once more. Their stir fried noodles and banh mis are very popular here and I plan to try those on my future visits to Phoenix. Strongly...
Read moreHmm, wondering how this received such amazing reviews when the average food is lackluster. Staff was nice and friendly and it looked clean (though his kids weren’t wearing masks while sitting at a table).
Food arrived quickly and I’m not surprised considering its quality. Vegetarian egg roll was probably store bought, tasted okay. Nothing terrible, nothing great. Vegetarian spring roll was blah and the peanut sauce was so bland. Never had peanut sauce that bland before. Rice vermicelli with tofu was disappointing. The tofu wasn’t cooked well enough, was soggy, not cooked with any seasoning, and the “fish” sauce didn’t taste like fish at all but rather tasted like water. The most watery and dull sauce I’ve ever tasted. Portion was huge so I threw half of it away. Not worth keeping.
None of it was praise worthy and I’ve literally lived all over the world and have eaten Vietnamese food in major cities and this was the most Americanized disappointing. Three stars for the very nice staff, efficiency, seemingly cleanliness, one outdoor table, brightness of the small cafe, and...
