We tried the famous Voodoo Doughnuts! The place is really cool, very upbeat and the staff is SUPER friendly. We were greeted by the bakers as we walked in, it was nice. The doughnut menu is posted on the windows outside the place and this is a great idea so you can choose what you want while youâre waiting in line. This place is really busy and thereâs not much standing room inside, hence the menus on the windows outside. Plan to wait in line unless you get there at JUST the right time in the MID-MORNING.
They have a wide array of raised and cake doughnuts with witty names and designs. I thought this was pretty fun and adds to the experience when you visit and are definitely a conversation piece when you bring these doughnuts to an event. The raised doughnuts are a little bit heavier than most that Iâve eaten. The crumb is definitely tighter and has more bite, giving the doughnuts a more dense and heavy feeling but they surprisingly do not leave a heavy feeling in your stomach after you eat one. We tried the Voodoo dozen with the assorted specialty doughnuts and a couple of the plain raised doughnuts. The voodoo dozen was fun to look though and had a wide range of flavors in both raised and cake doughnuts. The cake doughnuts are SMALL. These are very rich, sweet doughnutsâŠbest enjoyed with black coffee or some other drink to cut the sweetness a little bit. Next time we will probably just get the plain raised doughnuts as most of the special doughnuts were a little too much sweetness at once. I will say, the Banana Cream Pie doughnut was really good and not overly sweet.
The service is absolutely amazing there and definitely will keep people coming back in. Really great service and the place is cleanâŠReally clean, and you can see right into the kitchen where theyâre working so you feel good about the food coming out safe to eat.
The one thing that is s a little bit of a bother is how they box the doughnuts. The boxes are square and deep rather than shallow rectangles so they have to stack the doughnuts on top of each other and in the Az heat this doesnât travel well and the doughnuts look messed up when you open the box. Presentation is bad straight from the box and even worse when you have to pull the doughnuts apart and the glazes from the different doughnuts have melted and mixed into other doughnuts. It would be wayyyyyy better boxed in the rectangular boxes in a...
Read moreIt was my first time trying voodoo donuts and I really liked it! The donuts are a bit larger than some other shops. They are specialty donuts so they are more expensive which makes sense. About 4-5$ each. You can get a voodoo dozen (which is a bakers dozen, 13) for $25 but I didnât need that many. I got 4 for about $16. I tried the Voodoo, mango tango, grape ape and vicious hibiscus. The grape tastes like it has grape sugar, kind of like sugar sticks). I think it tasted good but some people might find it too sweet. The mango had a mango filling and it was my second favorite. I havent had many fruit flavored donuts. The hibiscus was also good and less sweet that the others. The voodoo is like a classic chocolate bar, I mostly ordered it because itâs the staple of voodoo donuts lol. It might be worth picking some to split and taste multiple.
I went during ASUâs family weekend so the wait was about 30 minutes which makes sense. I think soon it will be shorter. You can also order online for pick up. The decor inside is cute but there is only a seating area outside. There were however a lot of flies inside the bakery and the display cases. It might be off putting to some.
I live about 20 minutes away and by the time I got home a lot of the icing melted on the box. I was thinking of taking some of these to work but Iâm worried presentation wise they wonât be as cute when I arrive. Iâll give it a shot and edit the review after that!
The staff was patient and one even let me record while she was icing the largest donut (youâll know it when you see it đ). We both laughed and I appreciated it. I also like that the staff donât have a set uniform. It seems like a nice environment to work in.
They also have merch but I didnât have a chance to look. Iâll have to check next time I...
Read moreService is absolutely embarrassing. We stopped in because it didn't seem too busy, and it wasn't. But the girl at the counter completely ruined the visit for us - there is zero chance she has ever held a customer-facing job before. She didn't even acknowledge us, spent most of the time gossiping with one of the other girls that was actually working, and we had to tell her each order 3 times because she kept laughing to herself, or at us, or whatever she was doing. We got 3 donuts, and she literally folded one of them in half to squish them into the box, which she just threw on the counter - there was virtually zero customer acknowledgement, and even my teenager was like "has she ever served a customer before...?". We were essentially ignored and felt like we were interrupting her. Whatever young interchangeable waste of space (young, white, 2-braided hair, snotty attitude) was working the register Sat 11/4 @ ~12noon should be slapped with a mediocre donut and dumped in a sub-mininum wage sweatshop where nobody ever has to deal with her.
That said, the donuts themselves were.... fine. It was around $12 for 3 donuts - fair warning that most of what you pay for is artistry and vibe. The options are cool, and the donuts look great - the dough is bland, flavors are nothing special. They seemed relatively fresh, but I'd have a hard time recommending them over your random local bakery/donut shop, let alone a chain like Dunkin or Krispy Kreme.
Area is trendy, building/vibe are fun, props for having two pictures menus outside.
Recap: a fun but overpriced mediocre donut that I refuse to buy again simply because of the garbage treatment from the horrible wench at the counter. 2...
