We stopped in for the first time to get coffee & a dessert. We ordered and the cold ice coffee we ordered (3 total) 2 were vanilla and 1 mocha all tasted like instant cappuccino mix you get from the grocery store. Not worth $5 a piece. I wasn't going to make a fuss over it though. We then ordered cheesecake and coconut cream pie. Our issue was when my daughters boyfriend was speaking to me and my daughter at the table and mentioned he didn't care for the raspberry chocolate syrup topping. That it tasted very artificial. The owner/chef/ whoever he was sitting at a table near us became very bothered and began questioning my daughters boyfriend about it. My daughters boyfriend was polite and said you know what it's fine. The owner went on and on and on and on, the entire time we sat there until leaving about how he makes the raspberry compote and bragging on himself. He then went on to ask his staff openly wanting us to hear how his cheesecake sales were doing and if they have tasted the raspberry recently and if it were OK. He went and checked it to confirm with us it wasn't expired. Mind you. My daughters boyfriend never complained to staff. Never asked to send it back. The conversation we were having at our table was private between us and the owner was extremely offended and bothered and made this a very bad, unprofessional and disturbing experience. We will never visit this strange, uncomfortable establishment again. $35 for 2 desserts that was nothing to rave over and ice coffee that shouldn't even be considered ice coffee ... just hand out powder mix and water for people to stir together it would be the same. To put the icing on the cake, we had my daughters newborn with us. He could clearly see she had all pink. Pink blanket. Pink burp cloth. Pink everything. He (the owner/chef) very loudly interrupted us again from the other table he was at asked was it a boy, we didn't respond as we didn't even realize he was speaking to us. He then raised his voice and said it again very loud and stern wanting to be heard, asking is it a boy. My daughters boyfriend honestly handled the situation very respectfully and once we got the baby settled we left. It was a very upsetting situation. Have never experienced anything so absurd at a restaurant...
Read moreIf you haven’t visited Old Town Spring, you need to do yourself a favor and plan an outing here. Park your car on one of the streets, start walking, and you will quickly discover the countless charms that make Old Town Spring such a fun place the hang out. When it comes time to eat, you will have several options and one that needs to rank highly on your list is Ellen’s Café.
The qualities that make Ellen’s Café standout in the crowd are many, but it starts with the restaurant’s appearance/atmosphere. Approaching from the outside, Ellen’s Café looks like a house and the homey, comfortable feeling continues when you walk inside. The ice cream and fudge sold in the front of the restaurant add an extra layer of charm and give the restaurant the feel of an old- time ice cream parlor. Most who dine here will choose indoor seating, but they have an outdoor patio as well.
Stopping at Ellen’s Café for ice cream or fudge is great if you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, but I recommend visiting for a full meal. The food is American style and they have a wide assortment of sandwiches, burgers, seafood, etc. When I visited here with my family, we ordered mostly sandwiches and sides and we loved what we tried, as the food was fresh and prepared just right. The service is friendly, too, and they greeted us warmly at the door.
The great food and comfortable surroundings would be reason enough to visit Ellen’s Café, but there is one other reason: Possible Paranormal activity. You see, Old Town Spring is known for its ghost hunting activity and Ellen’s Café is also noted for its brushes with the paranormal. They have many stories to share at this restaurant. Just bring up the subject of the falling teapots or ghostly activity in general to one of the personnel and ask them to explain. You might feel a little creeped out, but don’t worry. As long as you’re not sitting beneath any teapots, you should be fine.
Old Town Spring is a cool place for shopping and dining and Ellen’s Café is one of the area’s best places for food, drinks, and sweets. I loved my lunch here and my kids loved it, too- especially the ghost stories. It’s a quaint and charming place for a good meal and a place you need to visit on your next Old Town...
Read moreI don't get it. The food I was served here was completely underwhelming. If I had to describe it I would say it is old people food. Me and my girlfriend were served two boring looking sandwiches with odd grey mushroom soup and funky looking potato salad. The sandwiches were honestly something I could make at home with minimal effort, I would just have to buy larger bread. I don't get why I was charged 11 dollars for a sandwich that wasn't even toasted. The sides were actually worse than the sandwiches. The mushroom soup was bland and lacked any flavor resembling mushroom and instead tasted like dust. I suggest using a variety of mushroooms not just the one. The potato salad was horrendous, by far the worst I've ever had. It tasted tart and had tiny pieces of something sweet running through it that did not help the already awful texture. The potatoes were soggy and lacked the tenderness you expect when eating potato salad. The best thing on the plate was the quarter of a pickle they serve you, which is also insulting since I paid 11 dollars for the ABC sandwich which only had like 4 pieces of bacon on it. They could at least give me the whole pickle. When we asked for desert we were shown an unapetizing apple tart wrapped in cling film. We obviously did not order desert. Another thing to note is the mats they use to line their tables. They are very old and you can see many stains on the table from God knows how long ago. It's gross to eat on top of. I cannot give you a reason to come here when there are places like the black sheep bistro, corkscrew BBQ, and the Italian place just a block away. I don't get these reviews. The price I paid was insulting for the quality and portion of food I got. When I go to restaurants that I don't like, I usually don't leave a review because I know how much a bad review can hurt, but this place was special. It managed to disappoint me to such a degree I find it necessary to warn others. Spend your...
