Smoothie King — Restaurant in Texas

I had a $15 gift card for Smoothie King and decided to stop and use it. I have anxiety about social interactions, so I pulled aside before I came to the drive through to verify my balance. I went to SmoothieKing.com/cardbalance to check my balance as the card has not been used. I had $15.00 exactly. I go to the drive through and order 2 Angel Food smoothies, one medium and one small. The total was $16.87. When I pulled up to the drive through window I handed the man my gift card and $5.00 cash to cover the difference. After a moment he comes back and says the gift card didn’t work. I grabbed my wallet and handed him my debit card. He asked if I wanted to put it all on my debit card and give the cash back to me. I said yes I’ll pay with my debit card. He handed me my debit card and receipt back. I asked if I could have my gift card back and his demeanor changed. He was no longer friendly and when he handed the drinks to me it was so forceful like “here now go”. I drove off and asked my passenger, my mother, if she saw that. Immediately she responds “yes, why did he get mad you asked for your gift card back?” I’m very confused as to why the man at the register had such an issue with me asking for my unused gift card back. I didn’t respond with an attitude or rude comment. I simply handed him my Chase debit card when he said the gift card didn’t work and asked for my gift card back when he handed me my debit card and receipt back. Otherwise, the smoothie was great. It was just tainted with a very negative customer service...
