Completely awful. I was totally unimpressed by Joseph's, and even felt insulted that they would address me in a manner that would make me question if I was wasting my own time, even if I was out going to just buy beer.
I'm not a native to Toledo, so I don't know much about Joseph's, but most of my friends that were locals would recommend me to go there to stock up on liquor for the few weeks I'd be in town. So we went to visit Joseph's.
The first thing that struck me as some form of irony is the location of the store. Directly next to Joseph's is Christian Store, and a plaza over is a pawn shop. I grew up in Vegas, so I know the relationship all too well of pawn shops and liquor stores. It didn't come as a surprise when we entered Joseph's and there were several loose pawn receipts, either lost carelessly on the floor or shoved between bottles of liquor.
The second impression was the overall state of disrepair that Joseph's was in. The floor looks like it has never been swept or mopped, a few lights flickered and others were burned out, and both the shelves and alcohol bottles housed disturbing amounts of dust. The store is just that - a liquor store. Come in, spend your money, then get out. That's all the staff could care about.
The staff was absolutely awful and unprofessional. I felt like I was being spoken to as a child. I found out after the trip that the "gentleman" who checked me out and "assisted" me with my questions was the store manager, Thomas Shea. I have never seen a more unfit man in a position of power; he would shy away from my questions, mumble an answer or simply ignore my inquiries about alcohol. All I could understand about my bottle of Lagavulin was what was printed on the label. I entered a liquor store hoping to find experts in liquor, but instead I was met with incessant nagginng and felt like I was being herded along, just so I can grab my alcohol and leave. The staff does not care about the customer experience, only about how much money can be used.
Thomas Shea was not the only staff member I feel that presented himself in an extremely poor manner. Near the back of the store is the coolers housing the cases of beer, and I could hear three or voices whooping and yelling and cursing. Some of the phrases I heard included, "What a f**king idiot," "Around blacks, never relax," and "She's just a woman, it's only natural." I could only assume that these faceless employees in the back were gossiping about the customers they had seen over the past few days.
Overall, I was entirely unimpressed by Joseph's Beverage Center and will be taking my business elsewhere for the remainder of my stay in Toledo. I have never seen such a combination of alcoholism and poor business sense combined to manifest into a liquor store.
Joseph's is a store that seems strictly to appeal to alcoholics and people who need their quick fix. Thomas Shea did not make any comment to a man with numerous bottles of liquor in a hand-basket who continually bickered that his child stay by his side. I would not recommend Joseph's Beverage...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTerrible experience today. I walked in around 11am hoping to get a few singles of what was recently posted online yesterday. No one seemed interested in asking me if I needed help. There were plenty of employees stocking beer and asking me to move as I browsed the aisles. But not a single one asked me if I needed help. I even asked a "too busy employee" where I'd find singles of a new beer they made a huge deal about on social media yesterday. He said they are in the cooler but they are not singled out yet and that will happen later today at some point. Not exactly the answer I was hoping for. So there was Prob $50 in lost sales. Then the only section of the store that had singles of beers was blocked by more cases of beer. Stacked maybe 7 feet high. I stood around waiting for an employee to maybe take a second so I could ask where another beer was. Nope. They were simply too busy for me. This is not how you get me to return. I'm disappointed. I'll be taking my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI sorta like this place. It's great that they were able to remodel and expand because it was so cramped before. I was a little disappointed last time I went in because they stopped carrying some of the beer that I really liked. They've gotten really picky on what they carry but it's just kind of all over the place. I'll still keep giving it a try to find new things but I'm not really thrilled. I also really could do without a certain employee that keeps hitting on me every time I come in and makes me feel very uncomfortable. Definitely could do without that. Last time I was in he physically moved me out of the way so that he could get to something on the shelf to show another customer. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable and I actively hide from him if I come...
