Our family was nearby for the kids' orthodontist appointment at Hannigan's, so I started researching places for dinner. I came across this highly-rated restaurant—5 stars with 65 reviews in just a week! That seemed promising, thoughmost had two or fewer reviews, which felt a little odd. Still, we decided to give it a shot.
First Impressions
We arrived at 5 PM to an entirely empty restaurant. At first, I chalked it up to the early weekday timing, but then we learned this location had just opened within the past week. The decor was spot on—definitely had a strong Mexican vibe. Since we had the whole place to ourselves, we chose a booth on the right side as you walk in.
Our waitress, Tracy (sp?), was wonderful. Friendly, attentive, and quick with service. She took our drink orders and brought out the chips and salsa, which were an unexpected highlight of the meal. The green salsa tasted incredibly fresh, while the red salsa was warm with great depth of flavor. I usually don’t care for chips and salsa at most Mexican restaurants, but these were so good that I couldn’t stop eating them. Unfortunately, that’s where the high points ended.
What We Ordered
Ribeye Steak with Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp & Charro Beans
I ordered the ribeye rare, which isn’t common but is my personal preference. While it was cooked correctly, the steak itself was a disaster. The texture was thin and leathery, the fat looked freezer-burned, and the flavor was off-putting to the point that it almost made me gag in some parts. I've had subpar steaks in the past (looking at you, Denny’s), but this was among the worst. The rice was another disappointment—undercooked and still al dente. The only redeeming part of the dish was the bacon-wrapped shrimp, which were cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Rating: 3/10
Enchilada Verde
My wife and daughter shared this dish, but it was another letdown. The verde sauce was too sour, overwhelming the taste of the cheese and chicken rather than complementing them. The rice was the same undercooked, al dente mess as in my dish. Rating: 4/10
Chicken Quesadilla
Thankfully, my son had a much better experience. He really enjoyed his quesadilla, especially the generous serving of guacamole. He also liked how fresh the salsa tasted and mentioned that the sour cream had a nice tanginess. While I didn’t try it myself, he rated his meal an 8/10.
Final Thoughts
This restaurant had a lot of potential, especially with its welcoming atmosphere and excellent service. The chips and salsa were a standout, and the bacon-wrapped shrimp were well-executed, but the rest of the meal fell short. Given how new the place is, I’m hoping they work out the kinks in their kitchen—particularly with steak quality and consistency in their rice. While I won’t be rushing back anytime soon, I’d be open to giving them another shot down the line to see if...
Read moreThe hostess was nice, our server, well I wasn't sure who they were either the guy or the girl, but we were checked on maybe once? It wasn't very busy but they were having a grand opening so we didn't fret about that... I will say the red salsa, rice and beans were absolutely top notch!! However... I've never had a chimichanga like that, not that drowned in sauce... I was a bit disappointed with it. My husband had ordered tacos and those too were a little disappointing. :( we both ordered house margaritas and they were okay.... Until we ordered a different flavor in which I took my first sip and it was nothing but syrup. I don't think we would eat here again but it may appeal to others... Just not to us. I'd...
Read moreTook my family to dinner here last weekend and had a great experience. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The food and atmosphere reminded me of the classic Tex-Mex you used to see in Texas. It was great. Food was good, appetizers were good. My wife did order a michelada and it was way too sweet, but the staff was incredibly friendly, understanding, and took care of it for us. The sopapillas were fantastic. 5 stars for...
