Red Rose Bakery — Restaurant in Toms River

Any time I forget why I left Jersey, I just try to work with one of its small businesses. MONDAY night I went online and used their ordering site to order a simple ten inch round cake for a 75th birthday party on FRIDAY. Seemed like a bakery should be able to pull that off in four days so I felt confident. I checked the ingredients they had listed but even took time to note that I was flexible if my banana filling, white cake and cream cheese frosting was a poor or out-of-season choice. Got a confirmation email my order was received. Doing good so far.

On Wednesday eve I hadn’t heard from anyone and - given past experience - got nervous. Called at 5pm, was put on hold, then told “oh sorry, we got your order yesterday but don’t have time this week for a custom cake. You’re welcome to come in and pick out one of our stock cakes?” Ummm nah - I’ll just go to Shop Rite thanks.

You’re a bakery. You take cake orders. Maybe pastries. Can’t even knock that out. So what, you’d just wait til I showed up on Friday on my way to a birthday dinner and THEN tell me “oops - no cake”? Twenty years ago these weak businesses would have just folded up in two years - now we’re all so desperate for services apparently we will...

Update to owners response: First off you clearly overestimate your level of customer service. When someone requests an Oreo cake they expect the cake to taste even the slightest bit like Oreo. Your cake tastes only like icing. How dare you insinuate that I’m slandering your business by calling me a liar. I don’t want your refund I just want to let everyone know about my experience and now your response.

Ordered an oreo cake for Christmas Eve and was very disappointed. We explained to the lady who took the order what we wanted and she said she knew exactly what we were describing and it would not be a problem. When I went to pick up the cake, the name was wrong and although the cake looked beautiful, it was nothing what we expected or wanted. It was full of cake icing and no oreos. Been quite awhile since there’s been a decent bakery near my town. Red Rose just opened up, I gave it a shot, and it passed with flying colors. Place was swarmed, but service was decent, everything I wanted was in stock and fresh, and even walked out with some pepperoni bread I was expecting to get.

Haven’t tried any bday cakes yet, but I saw some on Facebook or maybe Instagram and they are nuts. The pastry chef is talented as hell.
