The servers were friendly enough, but it seemed like they were intentionally avoiding my table, in case I wanted something. I'm not sure how fluent they are in English either, as sometimes I'd have a really hard time conveying my intents to them. For instance, when asking how much a soft drink cost, since it's not listed anywhere on the menu.
I tried a handful of appetizers, with mixed results. Most of the items were just average, and with the prices being charged, I was expecting exceptional food. The gyoza dumplings were identical to ones you'd order anywhere else. The spring rolls were overcooked and had almost no taste. The crab rangoons, had a runny filling that lacked punch. Amongst the vegetable tempura, I couldn't taste the carrot at all. The zucchini was alright, while the broccoli was a bit undercooked and crunchy. The onion rings were decent, but felt chewy. Overall, the fried food seemed to have spent too long in the fryers, and didn't set a good tone for the rest of the meal.
I think the one exception from the appetizers was the katsu chicken. The batter was crispy, and with the dipping sauce, gave a satisfying texture and taste while eating. Looking at a non-appetizer I also enjoyed, the teriyaki steak had a good taste, with some pieces being a bit fatty and chewy. Even then, it wasn't tough like an old leather shoe, so I'd say it was a pass. It got cold very quickly after it was served though, or else I'd have enjoyed it more.
A key flaw about eating here alone is that if you try one of their sushi rolls and dislike it, you're left on the hook to eat most of it regardless. Otherwise, if you don't lick your plate clean, they'll slap a surcharge on your already expensive meal, and ramp up the price even further. How are you supposed to find out if you like their special sushi rolls without blindly ordering one of them?
Having tried so many spicy tuna sushi rolls, I didn't like theirs because their level of spice almost blew my head off. Others had unpleasant textures, or just didn't blend together in a way I enjoyed.
What really messed up my meal was the shrimp tempura. It didn't have an off-putting smell or odd taste, but after swallowing one bite, I couldn't get anymore of it down. Shortly afterwards, my stomach started doing flip-flops. I asked for my check, was given a box to take what I didn't finish, charged extra for that, and paid almost $30 for one person. All of that for a meal that gave me food poisoning.
It's been a few days since, and when I tried eating what I took home with me, it made me nauseous, and that was without eating anymore of the shrimp tempura. That stuff I'd very intentionally left at the restaurant. I really wish I could have gotten a refund for this stomach-tossing experience, but I learned a lesson. I'll never return, and will steer any curious souls far away from this place.
Theoretically, you'd want to go as a group, sharing items so everybody could find out what they really like. However, that's clearly a risky plan, as your party might get a Taco Bell cleansing, at a steak dinner price. Plus, if everybody doesn't clean all of their plates, each person might get hit by a spurious surcharge, which is entirely up to the employee's discretion.
Even if I hadn't gotten food poisoning, this place is still lousy. The food is mediocre at best. If you really want good sushi, go to a coastal state. I ate at a place like this in Florida, and relished the sushi rolls they were serving, as each was made so well. It cost more than Mizu, but it was worth every penny. I can go to any Chinese buffet in Topeka, and get the same quality of appetizers and other dishes they serve otherwise, but without any worry of an...
Read moreReally let down. We were passing through on a road trip; sushi sounded good and the recent reviews were good.
We started with the avocado salad; one of ours had 7 slices of avocado (pictured) whereas the other only had 4 of similar size for some reason. It did taste really good though.
The crab rangoons were possibly the best we've had in awhile. They didn't skimp on the filling though it wasn't seasoned as it normally is.
The gyoza was also really good; crunchy outside, soft inside, and really good flavor both with and without the sauce.
From here we go downhill; The Yaki Udon; I got the beef and my partner the chicken. The meat on both were overcooked, dry, and tough. The chicken had a decent flavor but the beef did not taste good and made the noddles taste weird so I did not finish it.
The sushi was very hit or miss, but mostly miss. Their fish did not seem like it was good quality, and many pieces had an overwhelming fishy taste. Some of the fish was also very chewy and rubbery, where I was still chewing the fish after everything else was gone. The rolls were not wrapped well and the rice was crumbly instead of sticky.
Of the sushi tray picture; Top right; Avocado Cucumber Roll. You can see the cucumber in one piece fell out before they even served it because they were so loose. They tasted okay but they were difficult to eat.
Bottom right; Freedom Roll. The shrimp tails were hard to pull off. For some reason 2 pieces had only avocado and the other 6 had only spicy tuna on top. I really only liked the avocado pieces because the creaminess goes well with the crunch of the shrimp tempura, whereas the spicy tuna pieces had nothing to tone down the fishiness.
Bottom Middle; The Topeka Roll. This one by far had the most chewy fish. Every other part of it tasted okay, though there was too much sauce, but everything else was gone long before the fish was so you were left with a bad fishy taste.
Bottom Right: Beach Spicy Roll. This was okay. It didn't stand out as food or bad..not very spicy.
They also barely gave us enough Wasabi and ginger for one person let alone two.
The ice cream at the end was good.
We did get served very quickly after ordering which initially we were impressed by, but in hindsight we believe it was due to items being pre-cooked like the Yaki Udon, or done quickly and poorly like the sushi making and wrapping.
If this truly is the "Best Sushi in Topeka" then I can only advise the residents of this city to broaden their horizons.
Ultimately they had good sides but their sushi was well below par. The fish parts didn't taste consistent and weren't very...
Read moreI love me some good goood sushiiii😫! Let’s begin with the bullet point review as you already know that’s what I’m here to do:
*An all you can eat for less than $25 bucks? What are you waiting on😭?
*The customer service was amazing and everyone was welcoming.
*The food came out to us really fast!!
*Although it’s an all you can eat, you only have 2 hours and it is recommended that you eat everything you order because if I can remember there’s a fee if you don’t.😂 so be wise.
Avocado Salad: Honestly I was afraid to try it 😂 but it was surprisingly really good! I also loved the salad dressing they coated it with. Everything worked perfectly together as far as taste. However, this wouldn’t be something I eat on a daily but it was still good! 4/5
Gyoza Dumpling: For me this wasn’t the best. It was my first time trying it so maybe that’s why the taste wasn’t really sitting. My friend seem to love it but I just didn’t. 2/5
Harumaki Spring Roll: Woah woah woah😫. Spring rolls never disappoints! It was so flavorful too. 5/5
Vegetable Fried Rice: I loved the rice itself…I just wished that the vegetable were a little more cooked.🥲 If the veggies were fully cooked it would’ve been bussin but it just wasn’t. 3/5
Mango Shrimp Sushi: It has a very distinct taste 🥲. A strong one too and I honestly…… it didn’t sit right with me. I definitely did separate the mango from the sushi and tried to eat it separately but I still was tasting one on the other. It was giving summer vibe but not in the best appetizing way. 3/5
Salmon sushi: (raw) I couldn’t I just couldn’t😭. I’m a huge fan of sushi but the raw ones are hard for me sometimes. The salmon has a moist chewy taste that I know some people wouldn’t be able to handle. I couldn’t handle it. It was too much for my tongue. 2/5
Tobiko: I love me some caviar! 5/5
Godzilla: This might’ve been my favorite one. The flavors were blending in so well. I loved eel sauce with it especially because it’s my favorite sauce.
I loved this restaurant everyone was so nice and they ensured to always check up on you. There was also someone near by always to answer your questions. Food was great as well as the service and it’s affordable.
