Well I guess there is one of these places every state or so - somewhat legendary... but for no apparent reason. My lady who is from San Diego heard that Tom's is the closest thing to a SD mainstay everyone loves. We tried on a Tuesday thinking their "Taco Tuesday" posters meant they'd have some kind of special. Found prices way higher than other places. Preferring authentic tacos, I asked for "No Cheese" and inquired what else would be on my taco. The employee said, don't worry it'd still be the best taco I'd ever had. I wondered if Tom marinaded meat overnight like "Fuel City" tacos in Dallas. My mouth began watering thinking of Fuel City tacos. Upon arrival I was shocked to see a COVID era blockade at the front door. Dining room closed and used as an unsightly kitchen equipment storage. Washing hands before eating was out of the question. Lame. Eating in the car super lame. Eating Tom's Tacos, the lamest disappointment in a...
Read moreLet me begin by saying I have dreamt about these tacos for 20 years. The first time I had Tom’s Tacos was when they had a restaurant on Beach Boulevard. I was 15 years old (22 years ago), and they were the BEST crispy tacos I’ve ever had. There was something about the perfectly seasoned meat, cheese, fresh lettuce, and that unforgettable crunch—it all just hit differently.
After two decades of living in various parts of California (too far for a casual taco run) and even in Utah, I FINALLY got my chance! We drove an hour to Torrance for these legendary tacos, and they did NOT disappoint. The moment I took my first bite, I literally cried. It was like a party in my mouth, an explosion of flavors I’d been chasing for years.
Tom’s Tacos, you are more than just food—you’re a memory, a joy, and now, forever a piece of my heart. Thank you for being just as incredible as...
Read moreThis is Tito's Tacos from Culver City, but way smaller, less crowded, and more convenient for those in South Bay. CASH ONLY! CASH ONLY! Lots of parking. CASH ONLY!
As I noted in my Tito's Tacos review, I am not a huge fan of the tacos.
However, I really dig Tom's burritos :) The bean and cheese burrito in particular. I've tried the burrito with the meat, rice, etc. as well, but what it all comes down to in the end is that the beans are stellar (lard-tastic) and the cheese combines to make goodness.
I usually get some of the liquid guac and salsa and combine it with the burritos for a little extra flavor, but they are good without too. The chips are decent, the burritos are definitely messy, the ordering experience is way easier than Tito's, but the burritos (to me and my wife) are awesome. Looking forward to going back for some nostalgic flavor from the Culver...
