Imagine: you've been dreaming of coming here, to the Wild Rabbit Cafe, for a literal year. You came last year, actually, but didn't know about the weird hours (closed on odd days of the week, which is definitely a small town vibes kind of thing). So you turned away after a multi-hour drive, disappointed. Now, this year, you've planned ahead to make it into the narrow spot of open hours. After another long, many-hour drive (this time with friends), you arrive... To be completely befuddled by a "Closed" sign. How can this be? You check the front of the store, shuffling through the cacophony of posters and signs for one of hours. You check google maps. You check the cafe website. The hours line up (Mostly. Some were off. When are you open, Wild Rabbit??). The time on your phone agrees that they are open, right now. But no.
Since you've waited a literal year for this, and you arrived hungry, you're not too bothered by the fact that they are only serving coffee and pastries today. Nevermind they didn't say as much anywhere else, and your dream of eating one of their actual breakfasts was over before it began, snuffed out by another little sign on the door. Now, you just want a coffee and a pastry, thank you very much. But no. They're closed. Early. Because "business was slow" a worker tells you, after you've cautiously tried the door to find it unlocked and hoped against hope that it was unlocked for a reason. But no. They're closed. Because it's a small town. And apparently business is good enough that they can do what they want and not care that they've destroyed multiple plans on multiple occasions.
Well. I'm from a small town. This is not a normal experience. We won't be back for a third try. I'm sure the food is as wonderful as everyone reports. But if they can't be professional enough for clients to depend on their hours? Well. We won't be back.
Besides. Read a few reviews that rate this place poorly (even 4* reviews get a bucket load of excuses, if not sass). It becomes very obvious who you're serving here.
If you choose to give it a try, I hope you find the door with an "open" sign in front of it, and I hope the food is great. But I know I'm not the only one who has yet to see that "open" sign. So here's my advice, in hopes that you will get to add to the multitude of 5* ratings: get there as soon as they open, on the days they're open. Otherwise? Prepare to be seriously disappointed, in spite of your ridiculously...
Read moreThe food was good when we finally got it, but I'd recommend not going unless you have lots of time. Small place, 7 or 8 tables. We had to share a table with two other people because there were none open due to a group of 8 - 9 taking up 3 tables. They and the girls we were sharing with were already eating before we sat down, along with at least one of the other tables. Food was good, pancakes and a zucchini bread, but service was sooooooo slow I thought they'd forgotten our order. We also didn't get our lattes until after the food was delivered, even after I asked -- 20 min after ordering -- if we could get them to drink while we waited. It was 15 min later when the food arrived and several more before the drinks. In that 30+ minutes, two, maybe four, other diners were served. Pretty sure they didn't forget the order because one of our table mates got up to get a zucchini bread to go (cashier only had to reach in the case right by the register to get it) and was gone forever. She was 2nd in line when I had gone to check on our order status and she returned just after we got our food. The other coffee-bakery place in town was inexplicably closed, so maybe they were overwhelmed but, unless there were call-in takeout orders via another door that I couldn't see, they really were...
Read moreTorrey, Utah is not a large town. It is mostly a destination spot for those visiting neighboring Capitol Reef National Park. Yet, what the area does have in spades are bona-fide great coffee and breakfast joints. One of the best and most busy is The Wild Rabbit Cafe. Right smack dab in the heart of main street ( which is really just the main strip ). This place is a not so secret spot for locals and travelers alike. It gets busy early on, so showing up before the rest of the early risers is a safe bet. The staff is small but dedicated. They are able to put on multiple hats at the same time. Please be patient because the wait is worth it. The pastries are divine, and if you come early enough, they sell a basket of day Olds for two dollars a pop. Even old, these things are a knockout in flavor. They have a great coffer selection, with some interesting drink mixes. The coffee comes from Shooke coffee roasters, which is in the same space as Wild Rabbit. Give him a visit and chat. The food is also delicious and filling. It's definitely something to have before you start off your day hiking thru the gorge or up to Chimney Rock. Great place, great food, great staff. If yer in Capitol Reef, don't deny yourself some...
