Breakfast is so easy to do right and sadly, so easy to do wrong. We stayed the week of July 4th 2018 in Lake George Village and couldn't find a decent breakfast, even at Fort William Henry which always excelled for years.. So we found The Shack on the way through Bolton, and the place is perfect. The staff was friendly, the outdoor seating was perfect on the two beautiful days we visited, and the town itself lovely. So how was the food? It was breakfast done right. I think one of the things that quickly identifies the quality of a breakfast are the potatoes and the bread, and both were excellent. The hash browns were firm, not soggy, and well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The bread (I had whole wheat dry and my wife had the rye with butter) was not a grocery store loaf, but likely sourced from a local bakery or at least a commercial bread of high quality. We visit the Lake George area every few years and this will be our go-to breakfast stop every day we're in the area. We will probably stay in Bolton Landing instead of the village in future trips. Oh yeah, I think the reviewer "Kiki Jobin" is likely the type of person everyone avoids..
Edit: I forgot, The Shack also has the best cup of coffee in the entire area!!! None of that Starbucks type "stay-on-the-burner-for-hours" swill that most places serve. It was sufficiently strong but not burnt and bitter. My wife and I both drink coffee black and are sensitive to bitter and...
Read moreThe Shack served up a decent meal—good, classic lakeside breakfast that satisfied. However, the front-of-house experience left a lot to be desired. When we arrived, the hostess didn’t acknowledge us, take our name, or give any estimate on the wait time. It was clear they were overwhelmed and likely understaffed, but even basic organization or communication would’ve made a huge difference.
What did make the experience memorable was pairing up with another couple (a lovely mom and adult daughter) to get a table faster. Sharing conversation with them was a true highlight and reminded us how a good meal is about more than just the food.
With more structured service, this could easily be a five-star spot. Still worth a visit—just go in with a little patience and maybe make a new friend or two...
Read moreI’m vegetarian and normally I cook when I’m up in the mountains/lakes but I went out to eat with a group of people for breakfast. I figured the southwest bowl would be easy enough because it SAYS on the menu black bean chili with home fries, salsa and 2 eggs.
I asked for no eggs and sour cream, just veggie. The waitress said sure no problem. When I got the food it was beef chili with a few stray black beans in it. And the sour cream was there too.
When I looked at their site again on the DINNER menu it says Beef & Black Bean chili but on the breakfast menu it just says black bean chili.
Their website says they have vegetarian options. But all they have is a Dr. Praegers veggie burger for a stupid price. The waitress didn’t offer to take it off the...
