So many people talk about this edumpling place and I was kind of shocked I've never been there. Tonight was the night we gave it a try.
In Stony Brook there is a dumpling House called red tiger. It is a very small seating area with maybe 8 tables.
We kind of ordered dim sum tonight.
The boy ordered obviously chicken wings. He did not like them but that's because he likes very simple buffalo wings and these were not that. The wife tried them and really enjoyed it. They looked great and I would definitely order them.
The first dish we ordered was steamed pork soup dumplings. They actually have a special this weekend that if you order $50 or more you get a free order of soup dumplings so these wound up being free but were my daughter's favorite. They were hot and fresh and made on site. All of their dumplings are made on site and we're very tasty.
The next one we ordered was scallion pancake with spicy pork. These were my wife's favorite and she doesn't like scallion go figure.
The next one we ordered was spicy kung pao chicken bun. My son actually tried these and said they were his favorite. He has nothing to compare them to but they had a good amount of heat to them and he even ate them knowing they had vegetables inside of them go figure. They were very good.
We ordered shrimp dumplings which honestly nobody really liked.
The next one we ordered was a pan fried Kung Fu bun. It was ground pork that was not spicy and had a good crispy bottom to it. The top of the dumpling was steamed though and soft in texture.
My favorite the charcoal bun was filled with ground beef and sweet corn. Was it visually appealing not really did it taste really good yes definitely
There was an elderly gentleman there that we had a very lovely conversation with he was another patron who says he goes there about once a week. He ordered rice with lobster sauce and there were giant chunks of lobster in this. It looked great
They have black tea which is a big plus for me. They serve boba and milk tea we did not have them but we will next time we're out.
I have to tell you for what we ordered I was pleasantly surprised with the bill. All of this food was just a little bit over 70 bucks.
Future note they do prefer to tip in cash but my daughter stole all of our cash to go out with her friend this afternoon so we didn't have any I had to tip on card which wasn't...
Read moreWent looking for a nice place to eat and came across this new Chinese restaurant. The food looked spectacular. Unfortunately, the place is very tiny and can be crowded (even with nowhere to sit- you may end up having to eat outside or ordering for takeout). If you do get seated inside, it's a cute Chinese atmosphere.
My only complaints would be the lack of much seating, the filthy bathroom, the benches you sit on (most are broken- you may feel as though it will collapse with even just slight movement) and the cheap silverware. When being seated, you will be given chopsticks to help immerse with the experience. For those who have difficulty with chopsticks, you must request silverware. Aside from being very flimsy and cheap, they will only give you forks.
Service was friendly but rushed. During our time there, a waitress had dropped various glass dishes. One of the men had started raising their voice at her. I don't know what he was saying to her as I don't understand Chinese but he seemed angry enough and didn't bother making sure she was okay or unharmed. After creating more of a scene, he repeatedly said in English "it's okay". That poor girl was shaken up a bit. The way that man acted towards her was definitely a way to ruin our experience and to show they're more concerned about the restaurant than their workers.
As for the food, though it can be a little expensive, from personal experience each dish is around $20, more or less, but rest assured it is worth it. I can easily say this is the best Chinese food I've had on Long Island. When ordering, the waiter would warn us about a dish's spiciness, they also inform you they can add more heat if that's what you're craving. After ordering the orange chicken, spicy beef sichuan style, beef w. broccoli, pork lo mein, pan fried kungfu buns, and a strawberry milk boba tea.. the bill was $130 for our entire table. Keep in mind, this was to feed 4 people and the portions were very large (we had plenty of leftovers).
We got the steamed pork soup dumplings free of charge, they were probably our table's favourite. Thank you for the free dish! That aside, when ordering the strawberry boba, I received cherry. With no complaints as it was still good, I honestly just can't tell if they had translation issues with part of the menu. Overall a nice experience. Definitely ordering for takeout from...
Read moreIt's a take it or leave it kind of place. We went there again because I was in the mood for 3 things: Mapo Tofu, Green/Long Beans with minced meat & garlic and soup dumplings. I could get all of those dishes in Queens/Brooklyn/Manhattan Chinatowns but I didn't want a 3 hour excursion for dinner.
The food is good, it's not the best and it's not the worst. Their Xiao long bao (soup dumplings) have improved from the last rendition I had. The other dishes I didn't have here before. The flavor of them isn't bad and based on the how busy they are doing okay. But even with all that, there's a a lot of tacky things they do that make me shy away from recommending this place or coming here regularly.
Most of their tables have post-it notes telling you to leave a tip in cash. I understand their thought process on this but it's not your place to tell me how to leave a tip for you. This is on par with the tip jar at Starbucks and a tip jar at the bottle recycling shop.
There's a sign in the menu telling you not to order their smaller rice/noodle dishes in the evening/dinner hours. Instead of putting something like that on your menu, maybe switching to a dinner menu in the evening would be a less tacky way to get your results and not offend customers. If I need to feed my kid, and you have a small portion available, we are going to order it. We can just as easily go to McDonalds/Taco Bell/etc where I know he will eat things and it will be 1/5th the price.
From the dishes that I ordered: Green beans with minced pork...The minced meat was an add-on for $3. Although they did put more than I was expecting, normally the little bits of meat come included. Seems like they just wanted to drive up the price.
The Mapo tofu also didn't come with any minced meat. This is also usually included in the dish. I wound putting the minced meat from the green beans into the Map tofu to make the proper dish.
Then there was the case of missing rice...From the 6 dishes we ordered, 3 trays were dumplings so I wasn't expecting rice with them but at least one or two of the other dishes should have come with a bowl of rice. This is a Chinese...
