What can I say about the Candlelight Inn. People have been raving about this place claiming it to be the best place to get some hot wings since I could remember. I have eaten a lot of hot wings in the New York area. I love hot wings but I did not love the Candlelight Inn.
First after the hostess told us the wait was about 30 - 45 mins I wanted to leave but my friends insisted. So as we watched people who came in after us be seated an hour and fifteen minutes later we were about to be seated. While standing arm to arm with me and a bunch of strangers the waitress told us we were blocking the doorway and needed to move as we wiggled out the way my friend said "But we are about to be seated" and she got an attitude and rudely replied "Well I could wait another thirty minutes if you want". Like how rude could you be to a paying customer it's not our fault the place is tiny and crowded by locals.
Second after being seated they gave us lthis beat up dusty old torn apart menu to order from. I orders some of the wings everyone raves about and broccoli poppers. Our food came and my poppers weren't there so I called the waiter and asked where they were the waiter told me I never ordered any or he didn't hear me and had to place them on the bill. After that I was ready to tear into this hot wing. I bit into it and it was by far the most subpar hot wing I've ever eaten. They are pretty much super hyped for nothing because they are average like Friday's average. In fact White Plains is a 10 minute drive away I say go to Buffalo Wild Wings there. It's some generic sauce from a bottle and after you finish eating them you're left with a soupy, greasy hot sauce mess in your bowl. Anyway my broccoli poppers came and those were subpar it was like broccoli covered in prices cheese the kind you find in a hot pocket. Only a hot pocket would have been better.
Third we all pretty much drank our water so we asked the waiter could we have some more. He said "Sure no problem" and grabbed on cup from the table and came back with one cup of water. For one person when there was five of us. We all looked at each other like well I guess we'll just be thirsty.
Fourth while waiting for the bill to come (which by the way they don't take cards everything is cash only) the waiter spilled blue cheese and sour cream on my friends pants and shoes. It's that small and crowded that you can barely get around they are constantly dropping stuff but on his clothes. Instead of a "I'm sorry about that here I'll take something off the bill it was my fault" we got "Sorry here's a rag it comes right out no big deal". A waiter spills sauce on a customer and it's not big deal.
I don't recommend the Candlelight Inn I recommend anyplace that's not the Candlelight Inn. They have a place next door which is bigger but is only used for catering food. You can call and make reservations you walk in push everyone out the way and write your name on a notepad on the wall. You watch as they seat regulars before you as they take priority over you. Then after waiting forever to for a waiter/waitress to yell your name out like a barbarian to be seated. Only to have a rude or impolite waiter/waitress serve you. The place is outdated it might have been great years ago but now it's a shell of it former glory. There's only like 10 tables and it can only hold about 20 people. It's 2014 no electronic seating for a place so busy is like madness. And no cards accepted I can make reservations and order food at the push of a button from my phone and I have to come with cash in 2014!? It was my first and last time at the Candlelight Inn I'll never go back at all. I'll get wings from anywhere but here. I wish I couldn't give this place any stars it doesn't deserve them it's a crappy bar trying to be a Resturant and only succeeds at being a crappy restaurant. AVOID...
Read morei ordered from uber as pick up, so i went in the store myself to pick up the order. as i got to the counter i notice a paler tone male being help, im under the assumption he was caucasian. see, me, im of a mix race, i'm white and black. so as he took his order and left, i was next. there were 4 workers behind the counter, 3 women and 1 gay male. i can tell he was that based of his look and the sound of his voice. i stood there in front of them visually as they chose to ignore me and talk about complete ignorance as it felt the younger gay male was influencing the women to continue a irrelevant and unprofessional conversation about whats going on in his life. he even cursed as i (a customer) was in the building. we all use profanity at times, but to speak like that in front of customers is highly unprofessional. i literally waited for the first person to acknowledge me and the spanish workers in the back cooking acknowledged me before they did. there were 2 young women, an older woman and as i said before a gay male. i never seen the older lady act like that when working by herself or with a females as her partner. its like they were so amused by the drama he was speaking on in his life that taking care of me wasnt important. mind tou i was outside the restaurant because i was nearby, in the area.. so i chose to wait until i felt it was ready. my order was ready the whole time and they never took the next step in acknowledging me through the app that it was ready. so basically if i didnt had went in and chose to continue waiting outside they probably would of took that next step after they were done chatting about nothing. one female with blonde hair looks at me and automatically assumes im picking up for uber and not myself. i told her my name and she acted as if she checked the bags and never even gave me a response, i think she might of mumbled under her breathe "give it some time" or "its not ready yet" then went right back to texting on her phone right at the counter as the other 2 women were entertained by the young boy. so i waited but i do security for a living and i observe. i looked st the cooks in the back, who were all hispanic, and noticed they were looking at them the same way i was and im sure its because they took notice to me and seen they wasnt helping me. i made eye contact with one of the chefs and its like you can tell he felt was i was feeling. so i decided to slightly lean over the counter and check for my name as it was like 6 bags prepared already. the gay boy sees that, he stops the irrelevant conversation he was having to then take action and ask if i was picking up and what was the name as if i was working uber delivering to someone else when in actuality i was picking up for myself. i told them and basically my food was one of the bags that i seen "ready to go" so the blonde girl who acted as if my order wasnt ready was careless when i first told her my name and she "checked" for it. i took my bag and as i was leaving, i heard all of the 3 women mumbling under there breathe about me as they thought i didnt hear them. i looked back to acknowledge them i in fact did. if i was a female i probably would of turnt up, but i dont argue with women as i was raised better than that. i just want to know if anyone of color has experienced something similar? the food is mid by the way too,...
Read moreHonestly, if I could just take away half a star I would. Candlelight Inn is legendary in lower Westchester.
Ages ago I used to come here, occasionally on dates, and more so when I worked locally, in Scarsdale, on the graveyard shift. Where I worked, we used to order from here before the closed and being back a feast to the office and loved every minute of it. The food was and still is great.
So I walked in here last week, after not having visited in a VERY long time. Although the atmosphere has changed a bit (seems like some of it has been rearranged and cleaned up a bit, along with the addition of the outdoor tent seating), the ace remains the same and still as popular as ever.
I debated how hungry I was this visit. I used to get the wings and their wonderful blue cheese burger back in the day. On this visit, although I was not about to pass up the opportunity to have their phenomenal wings, I also decided to order the baby back ribs along with a cold beer.
Sadly I did let the waiter talk me out of the Chernobyl wings (their spiciest), so I went for the "extra hot" instead with the Chernobyl sauce on the side (I used to order Chernobyl back in the day). And the other regret (sort of) is ordering the babybacks. While the ribs came out looks delicious, they were not evenly sauced (little to no sauce on one end, more sauce on the other, and there was no dry rub which made the barely sauced side a bit bland).
The wings were hot, spicy, crispy and delicious (best wings this far south of Buffalo .... I said that back in the day too), and the ribs (yeah I should have asked for additional sauce), were good when I brought half the rack home and heated them up and added dry rub and some BBQ sauce a few days later.
Will I come back? Heck yes! This is the "bar grub" of my youth! It is still wonderful overall and holds dear memories.
Long may the Candlelight Inn stand! Oh, and bring cash as they are a cash only...
