I went about half hour before they shut down between lunch and dinner. They were a bit brusque informing me, and when I asked if I should leave they said no, bit we start taking the food away at 3 PM.I explained this was my first time, and that i have heard their buffet was good,so I had been looking forward to trying it for some time, but seed to get there after 3 PM, and has made a trip special today. I said i didnt want to rush, bit enjoy lunch and they said, well, we should art cleanup at 3 bit you can stay a bit while we clean the dining room. Wish o hadn't bothered
Well, there was a group of four businessmen, all vegetarian who had arrived just before me, and they were treated well. Staff asking if they wanted any of the vegetarian buffet it's refreshed, and checked they had dessert and can before ending those items. As a solo female carnivore, I got no such service
Several meat dishes were down to the last spoonful, and it had obviously been sitting there awhile. While extra bread and some kind of appetizers were served to the men, it was 10 minutes before I got a single slice of Naan. No one asked if there was any of the old, nearly empty dishes ID like the chef take little of.
obviously the staff recognized it wasn't the best quality because a regular came on for buffet takeout, and the manager or owner looked at what was left and encouraged him to wait 5 minutes so the chef could make his fresh.
As to start taking the food at 3, this was an understatement! I've seen buffets broken down with guests still eating, and usually you have time to get another more. Not here. Of course they asked the other table, and a waitress brought them what they they wanted. Then several kitchen staff appeared with two stacked shelves and in under 2inutes, only the chai and cold salad items and dessert remained. Staff then asked the 4en what they wanted, insisted they y relax, played and served them chai and fruit. I thought they would me, too, but no. While the waitress served them, the kitchen staff reappeared and then tea and salad bar were gone in under minute.
All I got was a check from the manager who didn't even Pau's or look ate, he just put it on my table as he walked by. At least the waitress finally asked if I enjoyed my meal. She seemed a bit sheep faced, so I lied and said yes. Once the men stood up, the manager pointed toward me and staff started taking my played. They still had food, and no one asked if I was done. I grabbed my chai and the salad plates with fruit and held it so they couldn't take it. It was mortifying and I was angry, but they didn't notice nor care.
The owner did say thanks or good day or something as I left. But at that point I had to bite my tongue to keep from speaking my mind. I figured $15 was a all price to pay to learn I should never go back, and obviously this guy didn't give a damn about keeping e as a customer.
Too bad since I love d over there when I was going, and Indian is one of favorite for dining out. Plus, I always look for high quality buffets to use to introduce newbies to the cuisine which I do several times a year. Luckily there are a couple other fabulous options in town like India House, Raj Mahal, and Amaya.
Do yourself a favor of you want good service and/or food,...
Read moreI am updating my review of tandoor from 3 to 5 stars now and let me say it is now currently the best rochester indian buffet (2019) imo - let me explain why below and also give a quick comparison to other Indian buffets in Rochester. (I will stick to buffet review of places only). First of all let me say Rochester is lucky to have quite a few nice Indian buffet places to choose from - among them Tandoor, Thali, Amaya, Raj Mahal and Haveli which are all in the Brighton/Henrietta suburbs. Of these buffets, currently Tandoor is the best in my opinion for the following reasons: (1) FOOD: The indian food in most american buffets has been toned down a bit spicewise but sometimes to such an extent that it gets a little bland and boring to eat too often. That is not the case in Tandoor - the current chef (2019) is excellent with many dishes spicy (but not so much that you lose the taste) and tasty - anyone who likes a little spicyness in their food will find this buffet much tastier than the others. There are still dishes with low heat index for those who might suffer from heartburn but this buffet is unapologetic about putting some heat and taste into the dishes! In this regard of the buffets I mentioned above, Tandoor is the best and Amaya probably the 2nd. (2) BREADS: The naan that comes with the meal is fresh and not soggy - which is great - in consistency only 2nd to Haveli. However unlike Haveli, Dosai is also a regular part of the buffet and so overall Tandoor comes first again in this category. (3) CHAI: The chai here is still sweetened with condensed milk - this is way more tasty than when it isn't and adding sugar later just isn't the same as it doesn't blend with the chai the same way. Other places removed the sugar for people with diabetic concerns - Tandoor hasn't. Which means this is better for most of us (tastes way better) but won't be good for diabetics. (4) DESSERT: Here it is servicable but probably not as good as Thali. Good but does not stick out over the others - Thali is probably best on average in this category, with everyone else about the same. (5) SERVICE: 3 years ago I wrote a middle review docking points for slow service but during the last 6 months, this has completely changed - now service here is friendly and prompt and so no longer holds the place back. Naan and water service is speedy - only thing that can sometimes be slow is checking in and payment at end but not bad. (6) VARIETY: Again the current chef is excellent and alternates dishes far more frequently than other buffets. Also the meats are no longer only chicken or goat with bone (which I don't care for but some traditionalists do) - here you also get usually 1-2 additional options - some very delicious like ground beef and peas in curry, xacutti beef or chicken etc. Also veggie dishes are also strong - all vegetables are not overcooked, stand out in both taste and presentation. (7) SETTING: Clean and spacious - most of the buffets in town are reasonable in this regard so this particular thing doesn't stick out.
I hope this overall situation lasts for awhile because it is a pleasure but hit it when you can as chefs and waiter staff do have a high turnover rate in these places but right now it is the best in...
Read moreI started ordering delivery from Tandoor of India about a month ago. Their Channa Saag is delicious. I order it with tofu and I order it spicy . It has been consistently good. My only piece of advice to them would be to blanch, then shock the spinach in ice water so it stays greener and tastes better.
The tandoor naan varieties are pretty tasty. This place has incredible naan, paratha, etc. I absolutely love Indian food and I was impressed with the consistency when I ordered once and then again and again the same dish and it was consistent. That's usually the mark of a good restaurant. I just felt that there was love in that food.
Tonight I ordered chana masala and chicken makhani. I'm taking off one star for this . I'm a former chef from fine dining with a background in Indian and Asian cuisine. Maybe that would consider me biased but I felt that the Chana masala in particular was waaaaaay too oily.
I understand getting takeout is a risk, but the amount of oil was pretty substantial and I had to take several paper towels to absorb all the ghee/oil. It even leaked all over the bag that it came in. I understand that fat equals flavor, but they really could use a bit less. It's not necessary.
I also ordered on a snowy evening so they were probably slammed with orders. I just could not get past the greasiness.
I just felt like ordering the Chana masala would have been a safe choice but I am not thrilled about the amount of unnecessary fat. I know that the beautiful thing about Indian food is the freshness of spices and there are so many vegetarian options and it's incredibly flavorful.
Just please cut down on the ghee/oil. I'm a fan of fat and food because like I said before it gives a lot of flavor. Just if you put too much... most people that order that dish are probably not going to have stomach upset if it's pooling everywhere in the container and leaking out of it..... You don't need an excessive amount.
I'm going to end this review on a positive note about another thing that I noticed that I really loved. You receive rice with many of the dishes and the one thing that I liked is that I can tell that they properly salted the rice. Thank you for putting love into the food. Like I said before, just please don't drown stuff in more fat than needed. Overall though, thank you to the chefs in back of house because generally speaking, I can really taste the love that's put...
