Chicken kothu porota: loved the spice level and flavor. It tasted like pasta. It was hard to differentiate the chicken and porota while eating since everything looked the same.
Chicken dhum biriyani: It had a ton of whole garam masalas! I wish it was a bit spicier but now I'm aware of their spice levels for future. The flavor was not bad and not the best. However, it's not the worst either. I'm going to attempt their lamb biriyani next time. The owner was nice enough to give me some chettinad curry to try it with the biriyani. I loved the curry sauce! I liked the biriyani after mixing it with that sauce. I'm going to try the chettinad curry next time.
Chettinad curry: on point! The spice level and the mixture of the garam masalas was blended really well.
Almond halwa: I have never tried this one so it was my first. I was expecting it to be like barfi but it obviously wasn't. It tasted pretty good. A very different taste and not bombarded with a ton of sugar which was the best part. The almond mixture was really smushed so that was a new taste and experience in my mouth.
Cucumber raita: this was the only part of my experience that I disliked. I think it truly lacked salt, cumin, and the greens. I have definetly tasted better raita unless raita recipe is made differently in south India then I'm not sure.
On good note, I will definetly go back to try other dishes. Next will be their dosas and chettinad curries. I will be recommended others...

Southern Spice is hands-down the best Indian restaurant in New Hyde Park! Every time we dine here, we’re treated like family. The owner and staff always remember us, and their warmth makes each visit feel special.
Now, let’s talk about the food—absolutely phenomenal! We ordered the jumbo tandoori shrimp, one regular spice and one mild, and they were grilled to perfection—succulent, smoky, and bursting with flavor. I truly appreciate that they went out of their way to make a special mild version just for me.
Anthony indulged in two separate goat dishes, both rich, aromatic, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. As for me, I had the butter chicken, and wow—it was pure comfort in a bowl. Creamy, perfectly spiced, and served with fragrant basmati rice, it was everything I wanted and more. The bread is so amazing that we had to order some to take home.
Southern Spice isn’t just about great food; it’s about an experience. The flavors are authentic, the service is impeccable, and the hospitality is unmatched. If you’re looking for a restaurant that serves incredible Indian cuisine with a personal touch, look no further. Five stars...
Read moreI recently dined at Southern Spice and left feeling dissatisfied, not because of the food or service, but due to an unexpected charge that left a sour taste in my mouth. As a patron who spent over $100 (with tips), I was shocked to find a credit card fee added to my bill without telling me in advance.
What struck me as particularly unfair was the lack of transparency surrounding this fee. While I understand that businesses incur costs for credit card processing, it's common practice for these expenses to be factored into the overall pricing structure or clearly disclosed to customers before they make a purchase. Although, it is not common to charge customer credit card fees for local New Hyde Park restaurants when spent over 100 dollars.
As someone who enjoys dining out and supporting local restaurants, I value transparency and fairness in pricing. Unfortunately, my experience at Indian Southern Spice has left me hesitant to return. While the food and service may have been okay, the unexpected credit card fee soured the entire experience. I hope that restaurant reevaluates its pricing policies to ensure that all customers are treated fairly and...
