I've been going here since I was a teenager and I am a grandfather now. However, I will never go there again. After telling friends, family and coworkers about it, things have taken a bad turn for the worse. Apparently the 'family run' aspect is a thing of the past and some (certainly not all) rude workers and enabling managers have taken over. It also is no longer the bargain it used to be. Everything goes up but it is more than inflation. It used to be a no brainer to go there but now for what it costs, it is worth considering your other options.
Probably still one of the best hot sauces but I won't know since I will go elsewhere. I highly recommend you think twice but if you do, don't take any guff from workers.I will now recommend either Bill Grays (you can buy their hot sauce at Wegmans too) or Schallers. Both probably as expensive but also excellent in their own ways.
Not that I updated a review I posted some time ago. I cannot edit the area below that says "Liked" so disregard. As I wrote, things...
Read moreFood is excellent! Walk in, order at the counter and find a seat. Fountain sodas, pickles and condiments are self serve. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The place is always packed with people, especially on the weekends but plenty of seating.
You have to get the garbage plate! My favorite is always with the home fries, red hots and Mac salad. Put the hot sauce meat sauce all over it and a side of sweet pickles and it's perfection! My son had fries and chicken tenders but after trying my garbage plate he left the fries and chicken tenders alone. My husband played it safe with a bacon cheeseburger. Honestly it was more like a smash burger and bacon was cooked to perfection; nice and crispy. He did get the hot sauce meat sauce on the side and said it elevated his burger.
I know in Rochester there's garbage plates everywhere because it's what Rochester is known for and I've tried many places but Charlie's wins, hands down.
Highly recommend. I will...
Read moreI’ll preface this by saying that I’ve had garbage plates from Dogtown & Nick’s (the OG). I was here over the weekend, so pardon the delayed post. I got a half-plate, which was still a huge portion weighing probably four pounds, with mac’n’homefries and cheeseburger topped with the cinnamon (mild but tasty) meat sauce and “a little bit” of onions, mustard, and ketchup. This was BY FAR the most delicious garbage plate I’ve ever had. I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back here. And it’s less than a 10-minute, quick’n’easy drive from Rochester General Hospital (so skip the Wolfgang Puck despite the convenience). I will add that the young woman who took my order was kind and friendly. The meal “to-go” was ready in less than 4 minutes. And the food was delicious, not at all greasy—literally PERFECT. And as I stood waiting, I noticed the restaurant dining area, as well as counter area, was super clean and neat. Clearly a great place for families with...
