The business has changed hands after the original owners of 40+years retired. I've picked up their plain cheese several times and the best plain cheese pie is no more. Over the past several months it's slowly declined in quality and taste. Definitely crossing this one off my rotation. It's not bad, just completely unremarkable.
OLD REVIEW: Consistently great pizza. Best plain cheese slice in town. And really friendly waitresses. They don't deliver and don't need to because they're still always busy. That's probably why some are saying they are rude. They're hustling to run the oven, register and phone, not presenting you with the wine menu. I kind of like the bustling atmosphere and it's nice to see familiar faces every time i go in. It's getting harder to stay in business in NY, and a family owned business with longevity is a unicorn crossed with Bigfoot and the Lochness.
And for people complaining about the decor: um, it's a pizzeria. You're sitting at an old school restaurant booth. With pop up napkin dispensers. And you're eating off a paper plate. Oh, and YOU PAID $2.50 FOR YOUR SLICE. You go there to get a quick bite to eat. Not to sit down and linger over chianti.
Great pizza at a typical looking pizzeria. No...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place better than i did, especially since the waitress was so personable. Not knowing where this place exactly was, it was a little difficult to locate. Its off 211 in the strip mall, in the far back corner. The plain slice was average, chewy, with oil dripping. That is usually an indicator of a lessor quality cheese. There is without a doubt better in the area. The bacon , chicken ranch slice was quite good and if that's your slice, you will enjoy. The chicken francese, was very enjoyable, served with garlic bread and salad. Perfectly prepared. I went on a recommendation to try the cheesesteak. Certainly better than others in the area, but not anywhere near what one might get at max's, in philly. This was dry and shy on the toppings, especially the cheese. Hardly any moisture to it and it dried out quickly. With just some minor adjustments to this hero, they could take it to another level, especially for orange county. Decent enough, and middle of the road plain pizza, uses sugar in the house sauce to cut the acid, if you have sugar issues. I wouldnt go out of my way to dine here, but if i were in middletown, wanted a clean pizzeria with a decent product,...
Read moreI’m so sorry to say this, but it is definitely not the same with the new owners. This is in no way meant to disparage the new owners. The pizza crust is about 2 to 3 times thicker than what it had been. The pizza is bland and crust was dry. It was so thick that you can’t even fold it over like you would with a good thin crust pizza, in which Colandreas was the best. It is not that the food is bad. It just is not the same. Buying such a beloved business and keeping the name leads to the expectation that it will be as great as it always was. It was our childhood, our hometown pizza, our best version of real NY pizza. The heart of the business, WHICH WAS THE FOOD, just is not as it was. It is not bad per se, but it not This is not Colandreas. I think it would be best to change the name. They’ve changed the decor, the vibe, the food and the general feel of the place. This just is not Colandreas pizza any longer. I wish the new owners well, but I won’t...
