Raja Sweets used to be a pretty cool spot. Back in the day, it was affordable, and you’d get rice or bread included with your entrée, which made it feel worth it. Now they’ve cut back and only give bread, which is a letdown. On top of that, the prices have gone up over the years—like everywhere else—but here it feels like the increases hit fast, especially over the past three or four years.
Their biryani definitely isn’t worth $17. The portion is small, the rice is lacking, and it doesn’t even come close to Hyderabad Dum Biryani in Fremont and a lot cheaper. To be fair, biryani isn’t really their strong point.
What keeps me coming back are the curries and the yellow daal. Those dishes are consistently solid, with good flavor. The sweets are also pretty good, but honestly, Kabila’s does them better. Still, it’s nice to have something sweet to finish off the meal.
Customer service is okay—they take phone orders without any problem. And one big plus: they stay open until 10 pm, which makes it convenient when you’re craving late.
Overall, Raja Sweets is just alright these days. It’s not the hidden gem it once was, but if you’re after their daal, curries, or a late-night snack, it...
Read moreIf I could give a zero, I would. The worst Indian food I ever tasted, the samosas had a weird taste and the green sauce was off (taste like mold), the service is terrible and they are very rude and disrespectful towards women customers. I was told my food would be ready in 20 min. Based on a prior experience, where not only they got my order wrong but I had to wait another 45 min for the food to be ready, I went to pick up the food after 40 min from placing the order. Obviously my order was not ready. I had to wait another 30 min and endure the rudeness of a teenager boy that was serving behind the counter. I wonder what high school he goes to. It seems respect didn't stick with him. While waiting for my order, two Indian guys were buying sweets. The total was $52 for two small boxes. One of the them was shocked and said: "How much? But the price on the wall says differently."His friend turned around to him and said: it's ok, we committed to bring this. But I will never buy from here again." Not blaming them. The rudeness and the food quality should make anyone think twice before buying...
Read moreUNEXPECTED. I was craving chole bhature this morning, and after running through many options, my family and I finally settled on this old favorite. (We used to crush down their samosas back in the 90s and early aughts. It’s a bit more of a trek for us now.)
The strip mall exterior of this plaza was updated many years ago I think. The inside aesthetic is the same as when we used to visit back in the day, and the nostalgia was real. As such, I don’t know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t the best chole bhature I have had outside of India.
The chole was perfectly cooked and spiced and even smoky, which is not a flavor I even knew I wanted in chole. The bhature were thick, flaky, and chewy. Overall an incredible, decadent meal!
Afterwards, we had some of their sweets and snacks to take home. These were also excellent! As someone who is not into mithai - especially South Asian ones which tend to be overly sweet - I was impressed by the flavor and balanced...
