Roast Cafe Bistro — Restaurant in Union City

Don't judge a book by it's cover. The food is absolutely elevated over your run on the mill Middle Eastern places. Expect fine dining quality with great portions and fair pricing.

We ordered the falafel, hummus, and salad as appetizers. It took a bit longer than expected until we realized that they legitimately made everything from scratch. The falafel was really light and not over fried. The hummus still has some graininess proving it wasn't from a can like most other restaurants. It was easily once of the best tasting hummus I have ever had. The salad was so fresh I swear they hand picked the vegetables.

They bring great flavor without overdoing it. The salmon was seared flawlessly while the chicken had the perfect amount of char. All of our meats were super moist outlining the chef's talent. As a bonus, we even had some decadent sauces used as decoration on our plates that complimented our meat of choice.

The freshness comes at the cost of taking a bit longer to be prepared but I promise you it's worth the wait. The passion and love come through with every bite. You will not be...

Roast feels like a bistro menu in a cafe setting, and I mean that in the best way. I went in expecting a basic salad or sandwich and what I received was a gourmet, multi-component, made from scratch lunch. I had a chicken milanese caprese salad and watched them pan fry the breaded chicken, cut up the fresh mozzarella, carefully cut paper thin slices of red onion, and toss it all together with fresh veggies and a balsamic glaze/basil dressing. It was ridiculous. We also tried the Asian shrimp salad, and also saw them pan fry the shrimp and toss it in a tangy spicy sauce, cut up the slaw, fry up wontons, etc. Everything was delicious and fresh. The rest of the menu looks equally bistro - hearty sandwhiches, burgers, and sliders. They also have coffee and pastries, but the bistro is where it's at. Food here is surprisingly Amazing! Surprising because you don’t expect such FRESH, expertly executed food from the outside. But the chef here is the real deal - a real chef with real culinary talent cooking damn good, proper food. Such a treat for Weehawken.

Our reaction to the food is generally, “Wow, wasn’t expecting that to be so good!” Everything always surpasses expectations.

And the staff are the best. So friendly. Always offering something - like free homemade juice while you wait, free ice cream for kiddo, etc.

PRO TIP: Order ahead. Even if dining in. The food does take a while to cook, because they are literally making every single item fresh. I’d say it takes 30mins at least for an order - so we always order in advance. Or come with a book. But it’s...
