Update: I'm very pleased to inform that an owner reached out (in less than 24hrs) and personally contacted the store to see that they made good on their coupon code as well as compensate me for any inconvenience caused. Apparently the tech team was experiencing technical difficulties, which is understandable- honest mistake, and they took care of it expediently and without fuss. As stated before, the fish really is good, and once again they did not disappoint. Special thanks to Tim for his attentiveness to customer concerns, and his willingness to make things right. Always glad to support businesses that do the right thing.
Dear business owners; If your coupon code doesn't work, have a solution, or TAKE IT DOWN! Don't bait customers with advertising on your own store window, and not honor your own coupon code. That's a bad business practice, and it's just plain dishonest. I can easily spend $65 each and everytime I come here, and a 20% off coupon isn't a negligible amount- it makes a difference, and in this case it's the deciding factor as to whether or not I patronize your establishment. Yes, the fish is good, but how is it ok to tell me you are aware the coupon code isn't working from previous customer complaints, and that there is nothing you can do (meaning you won't honor it)- and in the same breath ask me if I still wanted to order while the disount coupon sign is still affixed to your window?! Literally one of the very few times I would have preferred somebody lie and say the offer has expired, or you weren't aware of the issue, but is there any excuse for this apathy? No thank...
Read moreThe food is actually good. I wanted to try the fish and chips and the Fish was fried well and tasted good. The fries are not really British style. They are circular crinkle cut dollar coin style fries. They are not bad but they just add too much old bay seasoning.
The reason for the two stars is because:
Their website and their actual prices are not the same. The in store price is 4 dollars difference. I order the ten piece fish combo it was supposed to be 32.50 real price is 36.50
They are committing tax fraud. my receipts as shown 36.50 and a tax of 2.56 cents. If you do the math, 36.50X.07 = 2.555 or 2.56 cents. This is an effective 7% tax which was changed January 1, 2017. It dropped to 6.875% and January 1, 2018 it is 6.625. So they have been scamming customers for over two year with the change in taxes and probably pocketed the difference.
They have a surcharge of 3% on credit cards. They have a sign and its fine but if you look at the receipt I posted they charged the 3% post tax not pre tax which is illegal and again pads the owner's number.
Because of the blatant fraud I cannot recommend this place and have actually contacted the NJ Division of Taxation. Their few cents fraud per customer is now going to cost them huge fines.
Two starts cause the...
Read more🇬🇧 British review: This is not an authentic fish and chip shop. If you’re expecting UK-style fish and chips, this is not the place. My search continues.
That’s the only reason for 3-stars. The food is good and freshly made! Staff are lovely and very welcoming. Extensive menu. Possibly too extensive, but it’s the US and that’s to be expected.
If you want to emulate a British fish and chip shop: Chop your potatoes by hand to make the chips/fries, they need to be all kinds of shapes and thrown into the deep fryer. Salt and vinegar… this is an essential ingredient. You need to cover the food in that stuff! Salt alone won’t cut it, no way. Pickled eggs are a must. Even those who don’t like them expect to see a jar on the counter. Get those soft drinks/sodas lined up and on display. Especially vimto and irn-bru if want to own this market. Some Fanta too. Include bottles of that chip shop vinegar people can buy to take away. Buttered rolls. The aforementioned hand-chopped potato fries need to be poured into a heavily buttered roll in a carton to satisfy those craving a “chip butty”. Lastly, some spiked luminous cut-outs with pricing and special offers. To give it that authentic feel of yesteryear still omnipresent in most - if not all - British fish...
