My husband & I had eaten food from the Newtown Square Tiffin branch, & we had a fantastic experience! Their service was friendly & accommodating, & their food was flavorful & “Indian spicy” as we requested it. Unfortunately, however, this branch just does NOT measure up! One of the stars is for their friendliness (although we cannot accurately assess the level of their customer service since, instead of dining in as we did at the Newtown branch - we simply stopped in on our drive home to order in-person & then take our food home. So it was a face-to-face takeaway order.) The brief interaction we had was friendly, so they deserve a star for that. We ordered, paid, left a tip, & were told our food would be ready in “30 minutes.” They were much quicker than that. My husband & I thought it a plus, but when we got home to our food - the quality just was NOT there & I realized the swiftness with which our food was prepared might have been a bad sign… ☹️ I will do my best to be balanced & fair in my review:
The SAMOSAS were nicely formed & the dough was not too thick. It was cooked well. However, it was flavorless- not enough spice or salt, unfortunately. I typically think of samosas as an indulgence since you get so few (just two) per $4.75 order.👍👎
The GOBI (cauliflower) MANCHURIAN was not deep fried as I’ve had it in other restaurants (where a very red sauce is used & the cauliflower gets a nice sticky & chewy texture). This Gobi M. was only lightly fried so the cauliflower retained its original texture - this seems to be the preferred method for Tiffin when it comes to preparing this dish. I enjoyed this take very much. It had a nice (albeit subtle) fresh flavor & I liked the big bits of onion. So👍
The ONION BHAJI was “meaty” (as in they were nicely packed fritters) & fun to eat. It was too greasy (perhaps setting them on a paper towel to remove some of the oil would help them not be a bit soggy). There wasn’t very much flavor in terms of spices, but the onion itself had a nice taste. So👍👎
The ROTI was cooked all the way through & had a pleasant chewy texture & color. Great job!👍👍
The VEGETABLE VINDALOO & EGGPLANT CURRY were both underwhelming & disappointing. They not only lacked flavor & spice (they were no where near the “very very spicy” we requested; not even mildly spicy!), but the dishes were lackluster & lacked depth of flavor - even basic salt. The texture was very runny, thin, & watery (perhaps standards for takeaway orders are different than if we were to dine-in, but that definitely should NOT be the case because we are still paying customers. Yes, there is less accountability on their part if we are unhappy with a dish once we get home, but we still paid for their service & there surely must be a sense of integrity & pride in the food they offer!) The bits of veggies we did get (like a potato) were very sparse considering our orders were all the vegetable options, but they were cooked nicely (& were not mushy). However, they also LACKED FLAVOR.👎👎
To rectify this & make the most of the situation (my husband & I dislike to feel negatively about something we are eating & we certainly will not waste food) - we simply doctored the food up at home, adding spice to elevate the dishes & make them more palatable. However, considering the COST 💲(we spent $60) for the experience of having a night off from cooking for a date-night-in after a long day - we were very disappointed.👎👎
What I learned from this experience is not all Tiffin branches are created equal because there are different groups of individuals with varying levels of dedication/skill running each branch. The Newtown branch gave us an excellent impression of Tiffin as a brand, but the King of Prussia branch quickly destroyed it. Needless to say, we will not be returning to the Prussia Tiffin branch.
I give two stars for the aspects of each dish we enjoyed & for the friendliness during our brief interaction/the quickness of our order (although we would have GLADLY waited the full 30 minutes originally projected if it meant...
Read moreI found this gem about a year ago now. Wonderful place. There is for sure a language barrier depending who is working but I feel like the thought, the effort & the way all the workers are is so comforting & unlike any other establishment i’ve been to. The fact it is byob is such a plus too! The food is always SO delicious.
I haven’t reviewed before but our recent visit i think required me to mention a few things. My family just got off a very long 2 day 3 connection flight that included lots of frustrating delays and obstacles. When they finally landed, my mother was craving this place so i ordered for 6 people. they picked it up and brought it over. I currently live super close by. We believed what we got was wrong & the receipt didn’t match what we ordered. My dad called to complain and then went back to fix our order. When he got there, they explained the misunderstanding. We had everything we ordered but they gave us EXTRA food, without an extra charge !! my dad did try to pay but everyone was so sweet to him, they didn’t let him.
I will be back soon to say a big thanks to them all. What a homey, welcoming environment this restaurant has made. Thank you for treating my dad so nice after he had such a...
Read moreI can tell you with conviction that this is the worst Indian meal I have had in my 40 yrs of eating Indian cuisines. We ordered 3 things- tandoori wings, kaju matar paneer and saag chicken.
The meh-Tandoori wings- The skin was flabby, the chicken under-seasoned and the wings were floating in a liquid mix of stock and veg garnish!! It was just weird as a tandoori dish.
The bad-Kaju matar paneer- More like Ka-who??!! No idea where the Kaju(cashews) were. The matar(peas) were hard and the paneer....so awful. It was bland and rubbery, I imagine that's what a tennis ball tastes like.
The God awful- Saag chicken- The chicken was stringy and bland but atleast safe to eat. The saag base on the otherhand- it had gone bad...as in 'caused a tummy-upset' bad. It smelt iffy...My husband still gave it a try and regretted it in an hour.
We threw out about 60% of the food. It was under-seasoned, absolutely tasteless and in an hour we realized, a health-risk.
I know this review seems harsh. But we had a completely contrary experience at The Tiffin in Bryn Mawr and were naive to think that the one in KoP was the same standard.
BIG Mistake. Won't...
