At my in-laws' house the past weekend, we were looking for a place for takeout. This is suburbia and few places were still open until 9 p.m. on a Sunday evening. Gummlai Thai fortunately was place and as it had good reviews, we went with it. We ordered our dishes at about 8:40 and were at the restaurant by 9 p.m. for pickup. When we were at the restaurant and found out that there was a 6% discount for paying by cash, we decided to go with that option. Overall, the ordering and pick-up went quite well.
For the four of us - myself and my wife, my father-in-law and my brother-in-law we went with an order of Pad Thai, Dancing Shrimp, Tuti Fruity Duck, and Red Curry with Chicken. I am happy to say that most of these dishes were very good. Thai cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines and Pad Thai and Red Curry are standard go-tos for us and the dishes that we had were better than at the average Thai restaurant. The only dish that was a disappointment was the Tuti Fruity Duck. The gravy was unseasonably sweet and something that we didn't even end up finishing.
Overall, the portions were more or less reasonable though again going by my experience, portions tend to be a bit larger at the average Thai restaurant. Also the photos are a bit misleading, especially as it pertains to the Tuti Fruity Duck. We were more than a little surprised when we found how small the dish actually was.
Overall, I would certainly consider Gummlai Thai if another opportunity presented itself. While I did not experience the service of the staff first hand, the ordering and pickup were flawless - not something that can always be said of restaurants. Nice restaurant out here...
Read moreThis Thai gem is tucked into a shopping center next to Weinrich’s Bakery in Willow Grove, and if it were any closer to where I live, I would be here several times a week. The food is so much better than any other Thai restaurant in the suburbs, and to be honest, I like their food better than Kalaya’s in the city. The flavors are so pure and intense, and the service and presentation are worthy of a much more expensive restaurant. Don’t miss the wonton soup which tastes nothing like the overly salty version at Chinese restaurants. It has the most delicate flavorful broth filled with savory chicken and shrimp wontons, tender cabbage, and thinly sliced carrots that still have some crunch. My favorite entrees are Evil Jungle Princess (or Jungle 2 Jungle when I want to go vegetarian), and the Pad Eggplant, which is tender and sweet with just a hint of heat. Treat yourself to the homemade coconut cake after dinner—light and delicately sweet with large flakes of sweetened coconut and rich whipped cream. I have never been disappointed by a meal here, and every time we make the drive, I remind myself it’s worth going out of my way for this...
Read moreMy husband & I have eaten at several Thai restaurants over the past 10 + years. Hands down, Gummlai Thai has been the best and most authentic restaurant serving Thai fare. Excellent service with smiles even if they have close to every table filled, they make every opportunity to seat you asap. Can’t go wrong with their homemade Thai Iced Tea!!!! My husband orders lemongrass soup with shrimp & I always order 2 extra chicken coconut soups to go upon ordering (without mushrooms) the staff go above and beyond to customize what you may be allergic too or to make dishes less hot or more spicy. The Panang Curry with chicken & extra veg is my standard, my husband orders curry dishes & lots of favorite apps. The prices are very affordable and the restaurant is on smaller size but for us, it is quaint & romantic! This is definitely our “go to” favorite Thai place 🌹🥥💕🦋 Thanks to the staff for the great service, excellent food and service...we will be back next week! Kimberly and...
